Applying for Swiss nationalization via Bassersdorf

I have just sent off my application for swiss nationality to the canton of Zurich.

My understanding is that they have to coordinate with Bern and then at some point, the application is handed over to my "gemeinde" which is Bassersdorf.

Has anyone applied from Bassersdorf? I am curious to know what the procedure is and how long it takes. I would imagine I have to do a language test, a civics test and some type of interview.

How much does it cost?

I am also wondering if the police are going to stop by unannounced or anything else like that. I saw that film "Die Schweizermacher".

Re: Applying for Swiss nationalization via Bassersdorf

Hi,

I also live in Bassersdorf and can answer some of your questions.

There are two type of naturalisation, one due to marriage to a swiss citizen, the other one for all other cases.

It would be useful to know which one you are referring to.

In fact, the procedures runs as follows:
1. The Kanton (Zurich in this case) will do an "enquiry" and give a recommendation. This is where the local police is involved, they will ask to come for an interview to assess your cultural and language integration, confirm that you have no criminal record. At this stage, they might also come and visit you at home (see "Schweizermacher", it is not soo bad, but there is some truths to it)
2. The federal office of Migration will then receive the file from Zurich and review it, adding their comments if necessary
3. Bassersdorf authorities will have to confirm the decision, and until recently (I don't know if it is still the case), ask validation at the next public "Gemeindeversammlung" (public meeting of Swiss citizen in Bassersdorf). I have always seen filed there being approved
4. The final decision is then confirmed (point 1-3 might take 3-9 months) and all authorities (Community, Kanton) have 30 days to appeal. Only after these 30 days you will be able to order your documents.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Kind regards,

Littlebuzz

Re: Applying for Swiss nationalization via Bassersdorf

Thanks for the info.

I am applying as a non-married foreigner.

Surprised to learn that this could all be finished within a year. I was thinking more like 18 months.

I heard that it will cost about 3'500 CHF.

Time to start studying Swiss civics!
