citizenship and time spent abroad

I am currently living in Switzerland and have been holding a carte de legitimation for 6 years now. During the 4th and 5th years however I was abroad to do my master's degree (2 years). When I apply for Swiss citizenship will those 2 years spent abroad for studies still count towards the 12 years (as I was still holding the carte de legitimation during that time)? Thank you.
