As visitors can we bring our furniture?

Hey English Forum People,

I'm Canadian citizen landing in Zurich very soon, and plan to live with my girlfriend for a couple of months, and then together move elsewhere.

Right now she goes to university in Zurich, but is a German citizen. Before my arrival she would every day commute to her school in Zurich from Germany, but now we got a room at her friends apartment.

I was wondering how can we move her furniture from Germany to Switzerland. Bed parts, mattres, wardrobe parts, and other small stuff. Do we need to pay tax on bringing her personal things over? As "visitors" are we allowed to bring with us our personal furniture, and will it be taxed?

Your feedback will be much appreciated!

Check the Swiss Customs/Douane site, it will give you all the information. As I recall, upon establishing residence in Switzerland, you have 18 months to import your personal effects (own and used for at least 6 months prior) by filling out the proper import form and filing with Customs.

Re: As visitors can we bring our furniture?

"Visitors" is not a status. Do you mean tourists? Presumably that is the status of you and your girlfriend - neither of you is registered here - and you can stay as tourists (no work) for up to 3 months.

Should you be stopped at the border with a vehicle containing furniture, you will be asked for some sort of paperwork to show whose the furniture is and where and why you are transporting it. A Canadian or German passport will not be sufficient.

However your g/f should now be registered as she is living in Switzerland as a sub tenant. Tax is not payable on personal goods more than 6 months old. Make a list keep all receipts...
