Swiss dependent visa from India

Hi,
I have come to Geneva on L permit for a period of one year. Me and my wife got the VISA approval from Geneva canton in the month of october. With this approval in hand we were supposed to get the stamping done from swiss consulate in Mumbai. But the consulate stamped the visa only on my passport and not on my wife's passport saying that we would need to get the marriage certificate verified by them (the consulate) which would have a cost of Rs 35000 /- and which would take a minimum of 8 weeks. This despite the fact that we had already legalized the marraige cert from the home department and from external affairs in delhi. Having no other option in hand, we decided to go ahead with the procedure. And after around 6 weeks a representative of the Embassy in delhi came to our home town to verify the marraige details. And he said that we shud get some news from the consulate in 2 weeks. Now 10 weeks have passed by since the process started, but we do not have any news. And more over we cannot contact the consulate directly as they have told us that we shud contact them only after 3 months or else our application will be rejected.
Is there anyone who has had the same experience? Does anyone have any idea as to how much time it really takes? And is there a chance of rejection in this case? Please help.

Hi,

I am really surprised reading this post. the marriage certificate is legalised at the time you start work permit application process. One you get the approval form (pdf) you just need to submit passport and some other basic documents to get the stamping done. It takes 2-3 days for stamping at max.

I am not sure why authorities goofed up with your application.

Hi,

Even I am also very much surprised after hearing your experience. Once you have marriage certificate legalized, no other legalization is required. Why should you pay extra 35K for legalization when you have already completed that process. I hope your company is only processing your wife's dependent permit, right? You should talk to your company ASAP.

If you have permit approved, then visa stamping shouldn't take more than 7 working days.

Regards,

Re: Swiss dependent visa from India

We were asked for this verification fee (~1000 CHF) recently, to legalize our marriage. Fortunately for us we both have independent B permits, so we declined to go through the process. Probably this is a new procedure, or they ask for the process to "randomly selected" couples.

We too were asked to go through this 1000 chf process, even though we've been "married" in their system for the last 2 yrs and paying (higher) taxes as married couple.
As is the case with a lot of other things here, different people in the same department give different information depending on what time/month/weather you go there!!!

Re: Swiss dependent visa from India

The request for Legalizing a document by the Swiss Embassy never comes from the Embassy / Consulate. The request has to originate from the concerned Canton.

And even Swiss Emabassy does not verify the certificate, but rather sub contracts to other vendor. Only the approval that it has been verified comes from the Emabssy.

The cost of that is definetely not 35k INR. Verification of a document costs about 8k INR.

However, if you are initiating the process from Switzerland then you could be asked for 1000 CHF, but not all will be used up.

And even from the Canton the request comes only in cases of suspicion or in case of anticipation of birth of a child within the duration of the period the person intends to stay or if a child has been born in Switzerland (the last case does not apply as you are new).

So the question remains - When were you married? Also, check the approval letter from the Canton, whether anything to that effect has been mentioned. Your office should prob take this up.

There is no question of your appln being rejected if you ask about the status. Enquire with embassy via email about the status giving the dates of each step.
