I'm a non-EU citizen that will do an internship at an UN-related organization. What kind of carte de legitimation will I have and how long does it take to get one?

The organisation will take care of all the paperwork and arrangements with the swiss authorities. They would not allow you to start the intership until everything was in order.

The process is as follows:

1. You arrive to Switzerland on a tourist visa (that is, unless you already are in Switzerland or have any other legal means of getting into Switzerland).
2. On the first day of your employment / internship, and upon signing the contract, you are given the forms to fill out for the carte. You will also attach to these a photocopy of the document authorizing you to stay in Switzerland / Schengen Area.
3. The organization then sends the paperwork off to DFAE (Department federal des affaires etrangeres - or so it says on my carte, anyway!).
4. You will receive the carte in about two weeks.

You will have the H carte, which does not grant you immunity from prosecution or access to the Swiss labour market. The first provision changes depending on the seniority of the carte holder.

Note that exceptions to expedite the above process are possible, but are unlikely to apply to interns.

George, any idea on how long the renewal of the carte usually takes (from the point I submit it to the HR 'til I get it back) ?

It takes about 2weeks to a month.

Of course, it depends on your HR :-)

But from the day they send the documents, it takes about two weeks to receive the carte. The longest it's ever been for me is three weeks, and that was during the Christmas period.
