Can I travel to Shengen countries? - non-EU passport with a L-permit

I am a Chinese national and are sent by my home university to Swiss for one exchange semester. I am in the process of getting a L-permit. I am wondering whether I can travel to other Shengen countries in this period?

I read from other websites that it is possible only if the L-permit is valid for at least 4 months. while I have questions:
1) what does 4 months refer to? does it refer to the whole period of stay or the remaining time when cross-border takes place?
2) since I really have no idea what period the university and residence office offers to me, is it that strict that I cannot travel if it is slightly within 4 months?
3) if unluckily the residence permit does not work. can I still try other methods, like applying for a Shengen visa at Chinese embassy, or some way else?

Really appreciate if anyone could kindly help

As I know, when you have your L permit in hand. Yes, you would travel into Shengen-countries. The most important thing when traveling is bringing both the permit and the passport.

you need to present a valid passport and your L permit when travelling to Schengen countries(entering and leaving at the external borders)
