Security Clearance Needed for Residency Permit?

Hello all, I'm about to receive an employment contract from a Swiss company. I have engaged a lawyer to help process my application for my work/residency permit and he has given me a list of documents I must provide. Among them is a request for an FBI security clearance a.k.a. a Letter of Good Conduct that Basel will require [I am a US citizen]. I've never heard of such a requirement. My lawyer says that it could take up to 12 weeks so to get it started a.s.a.p. I was just curious if any other US citizens have been asked to furnish this. It's not a problem; I've just never seen a it mentioned in this forum.

My question is, why are you approaching a lawyer for your permit application? If you have received an employment contract from a Swiss company, it is the responsibility of that Swiss Company to handle your permit and they will contact you regarding required documents.

As a US citizen who has held L, B and C Permits (currently on my C), I have only provided:

1) Photos
2) CV
3) Copy of Employment contract
4) Copy of University Diplomas
5) Passport
6) Stamped pay slip showing I have paid the permit fee
7) Salary letter (when I applied for my C Permit)

I never heard anything about an FBI check. The only criminal record check I had done by Kanton Basel was when I moved to Switzerland and the Immigration Office asked me whether I had a criminal record, to which I said "No"; that was it.
