Confused D/L Permit

I am a non- EU student here in Switzerland for a year until January 2012. ( two semesters )
I got my D permit and it says it expires on 19 April. I just got my L permit in the mail and it says it expires 30 June.
I applied for a year. So, do I do more forms to extend the visa?
Also I wanted to go to France 25 - 30 April. Will I be able to? Will I be able to come back into the country?
The semester ends June 30th.
I also wanted to go home for the summer June - August but do not know if I will be allowed to/ allowed to come back to Switzerland.

I'm just soo confused and getting tired of all the forms. ( My last exchange to Canada I didn't have to this much at all! )

Thanks if someone can clear this up for me!!

Re: Confused D/L Permit

Hi there!
I think that providing more informations will guide people to help you better. You need to specify more clearly your nationality and also provide informations on what is said on the permit of stay document.

Was it stated in your visa that it is a Multiple Entry or Single Entry? In fact, from my knowledge, if your visa is a multiple entry, you are free to travel to France even if the visa is expired; the only thing you have to couple to that visa is a Valid Permit of Stay in Switzerland.

As it concerns the matter of going home during holidays and coming back to switzerland, you have to do it within the period of validity of your permit of stay.

I hope this will help you!

Re: Confused D/L Permit

I think that your trip to France can be done without any problem within the period of validity of your permit of stay in Switzerland; as Switzerland is part of the Schengen area and you are legally entitled to the free movement of persons within the area. That is, you can travel freely from the 25 - 30 April.

In addition, if I were you, I would apply for another extension of my permit of stay (that is to get a permit which will valid from 30 june onwards) by explaining clearly that I am taking a 2 two semesters program and a get a new document before going home for holidays.

Re: Confused D/L Permit

Hi there!

I guess that you got a form to fill in in order to change your permit of stay from a D type to L type; and also that, on that same form, there was a space related to the renewal of the permit.
What I called extension was to be understood as renewing a permit. Though, I highly advise you to go and discuss it directly with the authority in charge no matter stressful it can be.

You are a bit confused.

D = a visa
L = a residence permit

Once you have the residence permit it replaces your visa. You can travel with it.

Why it expires on June 30? No-one can tell you except your local town hall.

Thanks that clears that up more.
Well my rent ends June 30th so maybe that is it?
I need to redo my rent after June 30th.
