Changing jobs - what happens to permits?

Hi,

I am an EU citizen working for a swiss company (that I actually want to leave in the long term). They offered me to come over and work in Zurich. I had two questions:

1. I have heard the work permit is valid for 5 years. Suppose I find another job, is the work permit and residence permit still valid or does the "new" company has to apply for a new permit (or check whether another swiss person can do the same job)? If so, does this process take a long time?

2. Suppose anything goes wrong and I get fired. Will the work permit or residence permit be withdrawn?

Best regards,

Christianinvest

As you are from the EU you will be able to change jobs. If you're fired then it depends on things like how long you are here etc, but you are entitled to stay and look for work for a few months on a normal visa anyway.

Suppose I get fired within the first 3 months? Do I have to leave the country or how much time do I have to find a new job?

I would recommend not getting fired at all if you want to find another job in Switzerland - they kind of look on it badly. But, it depends to a degree on the length of your permit, I'm not sure you will just arrive and pick up a 5 year permit no matter what your employer tells you.

I know somebody who had a 6 month permit and got fired and he managed to get an extension of 6 months to look for another job. I don't know if this is typical though.

He will. He is EU and it is his right.

As an EU citizen your residence permit has nothing to do with your employer. You apply for it personally. It is valid as long as you are in gainful employment or self employment. If you get fired there is an unemployment body who will even help youur find a new job and you can get unemployment benefits after a qualifying period. If you resign, same thing but with a few months without benefits. Your permit will not be withdrawn while jobseeking for at least 6 months.
