Re: VISA's vs Permits for work at CERN

HI Everyone.

Just to update and confirm for anyone else with a family that is moving to Work at CERN in the future.

We had to apply for D visa's for both switzerland and france. The Swiss was actually easy once you have all the paper work done. The french one requires a "note verbal" to be sent from paris. The french embassy in SA had no clue what was going on, as they consider the note verbal to only be for diplomats.

Finally got it however, and my son and i were given diplomatic visa's... However i dont think this is the norm, and only the SA embassy that was fast asleep.

As soon as we arrived, we went to the CERN users office with all our paper work. You then head to building 55, where they take your photos, and issue you your CERN access cards. These photos are then also used for the users office to apply for your "carte de legitimation". Ours arrived back in 7 working days. Please note as well that this is for the swiss "carte de legitimation". Since we are planning on staying in geneva, we havent found out what the french process is like.

The reason for this is that I would like to work in Geneva, and we need to stay in switzerland in order for that to happen. CERN however recommends for people to stay in France, as it is much cheaper.

Secondly, is the permit. CERN organises the paper work that states the spouse of the CERN member/user, is allowed a Ci permit. This document is to be given to the company that you are applying for a job with. All they need to do is hand it to the local canton office, who will then automatically issue the Ci work permit. This permit is valid as long as the term of contract of the CERN member.

Right now we are apartment hunting, but i will update again, once I get a chance to start job hunting. Unfortunetly right now, i cant really do that, as we need a place to stay, and then find a school for my son before i can spend time job hunting. Yes i know i should start now, but if i get a job before the other two are in place.. We will have a problem with my son during the day.

PS: so far everything has been great and everyone has been friendly and helpful.
Pss: sorry if there is any bad spelling, trying to getbused to typing on an IPAD, until we can get a perm internet connection.

Kalvaer, welcome to Switzerland! I hope your time at CERN will be a happy experience for you and your family.

As far as accommodation is concerned, have you looked at the CERN notice board (close to the Post Office if my memory serves me correctly) in the building which houses the main restaurant?. Usually quite a few properties in both France and Switzerland are advertised there.

Good luck!

We have checked the boards and also the CERN housing website, the first place we applied for was actually from those boards. We never had all our paper work in order though, so got that done now (learning as we go).

Really cant wait to settle down, so far its been great. I know thats not always the case, but remaining positive it will continue.

We also have some great people at the ATLAS Secretariate <sp?> helping us with the search, and supplying Cern reference letters and doing all the phoning in french for us... Wouldn't be able to with out them.

Right now we are going through all the various websites, and then doing the "regie" run around (another big learning curve). We have found 2 places we like, just need to wait for owners to approve, so carrying on with the hunt. My wife found 2 apartments today in the same building that we will apply for tomorrow as well to see what happens
