using swiss passport to live/work in another country?

hello there, first post!!

i am an australian man and i am currently living with a swiss national in australia. we are planning to get married in the coming years and we are not sure if we would like to continue living/working in australia. however we are not sure if we would like to live/work in switzerland either.

so, assuming that we are married and i have obtained swiss citizenship & a swiss passport.... are there other countries where being swiss would allow us to live/work?

i understand that swiss is not a member of the EU so going and working in (say) spain is not as easy as it would be if we both had UK passports/citizenship. however, i thought that switzerland might have agreements with adjoining countries like france or germany that might allow us to freely live/work in their country for a period of time, much the same way as australia does with new zealand??

thankyou in advance for your assistance!

What rights do I have as a Swiss national?

You and your family members have the same rights as EEA nationals and their family members. The information in this guidance also applies to Swiss nationals and their family members.

European Community law gives EEA nationals a right to live and work in the UK. This is called a right of residence.

Re: using swiss passport to live/work in another country?

thanks for your reply and kind welcome jrspet

from what i understand the text you have posted only applies if we wanted to live/work in the UK? what about the rest of europe - or specifically spain or germany - which are the countries we are considering?

just as an aside - funny how the UK immigration policy is more generous towards unrelated swiss than to their aussie cousins!! it must be a convict thing!! bloody poms!

Re: using swiss passport to live/work in another country?

It gives citizens of Switzerland and of the EU states the right to work and live in the territory of whichever of the countries concerned they choose.

This is conditional however on the possession of a valid employment contract, being self-employed, or in the case of a person not in gainful employment, being financially independent and having full health insurance cover. To support the free movement of persons further, the partners have also agreed on the mutual recognition of professional diplomas and to coordinate national social security schemes.

Re: using swiss passport to live/work in another country?

thankyou jrspet - so it appears that swiss citizens can work wherever in the EU they choose. that is great news!

however it seems that it will be a lot harder for me to become a swiss citizen than i thought..

http://www.bfm.admin.ch/content/bfm/...uergerung.html

...which is frustrating because it is much easier for my partner to become an australian citizen. she just has to marry me, eat a meat pie, and correctly identify a drop bear. then she gets an aussie name (we think shazza will suit her) and a passport.

but anyway, as her spouse, if she gets a job in another EU country then I should be able to accompany her and also be allowed to work in that country? so we would achieve the same outcome, just not quite the way we first thought??

You don't need to be - your wife's (or registered partners) status also apllies to you i.e. she gets a job then you join her on the same residence status.
