I have a C permit. I'm from the US. Can my spouse work?

Hi, I've read conflicting information about this, so am hoping someone can give me the real skinny...

I have just moved here from Canada with my spouse. I am an American citizen. He is Canadian. I was fortunate enough to be granted a C permit (I know that I got the golden ticket, but I don't know why). He got a spousal permit. I want him to have a permit that allows him to work. I've read that if I was from an EU country I could get him a work permit. But, I have not found information indicating whether I can do this as an American citizen.

Thanks for any advice.

Just curious - if the authorities issue you the wrong permit, will they revoke this when they find out?

It's unlikely.

A little more detail is required. C permits can be issued for 'first timers' in certain circumstances - governament jobs for example. Can you gove a hint as to your field of employment?

Maybe you should use a questionmark (?) when you ask a question?

Unless you say how you got your permit it is not possible to provide a correct answer but generally the spouse of a C permit holder can work irrespective of nationality.

The authorities can revoke any permit at any time under certain circumstances. One of these is the incorrect issue of a permit. Generally though they will not do this, unless you commit a criminal act. They will simply renew it with the correct permit - this happens a lot.

I was fortunate enough to be granted a C permit (I know that I got the golden ticket, but I don't know why).
Folks, I am not asking why I got the C permit. I just got one. That is the truth. It's not a Ci permit. It is a C permit. I know I got the golden ticket. Perhaps my employer is just kick ass? Perhaps they know the right people? Perhaps my skill set is one that Switzerland wants to keep? I don't know why and I haven't ask why. Regardless, my question is not "why" I got it. My question is can my spouse work, since I have a C permit and am from a non EU country. While I sincerly appreciate your willingness to help, the answer is not dependant on what I do for my job.

In an attempt to answer the question from person who speaks German (I know less than 10 German words)... While I don't know exactly what you are asking, I can say that yes, the permit costs money. I do not know how much. My employer paid for it. My employer took care of everything with the permit. So far, I love my employer and I hope that doesn't change.
If you are asking something different, please say so.

Without additional information, the inference here is that a mistake has been made - as a US citizen, in order to get a C permit you must normally complete at least 5 years residence in Switzerland.

If a mistake has been made you might not want to rattle any cages by persuing employment for your partner.

If, however, there are special circumstances (for example maybe you are a university professor in a specialist area which Switzerland would like to invest in) then these special circumstances could also include special inclusions or exclusions for your partner.

Richard has already answered that the spouse of a bona fide C permit normally has no restrictions when it comes to employment. I think that's about as much of an answer as you will get based on the information available.

Ok, Thanks.
It's a bona fide C permit. Thanks to you both for the help.

Re: I have a C permit. I'm from the US. Can my spouse work?

Like Swissbob said, unless you have some special status which grants you a C permit in your first year, it is very likely that your permit is malafide.

How are you so sure your C permit is issued for the right reasons? You dont seem to know why you got it in the first place.

Re: I have a C permit. I'm from the US. Can my spouse work?

Based on the information you all provided, my permit is a bona fide C permit. Like I said, perhaps I have a skill set Switzerland wants to keep. It seems that I do.

I really appreciate your help.

Re: I have a C permit. I'm from the US. Can my spouse work?

Actually, I prefer to have hard facts on this. While I sincerely appreciate your insight, can you provide me with a link that gives me these details regarding a C permit and spousal rights to work?

I know my C permit is real. I'd just like to confirm my spouse's right by viewing the legislation. I have not been able to find it - hence my original inquiry.

Thanks.

Re: I have a C permit. I'm from the US. Can my spouse work?

Congrats on your C permit. I got one too when I moved here. Not so easy for us Americans as we fall in the third catagory of people allowed to be honored with them. My best guess is your man should call his embassy to find out Canadian rights to work. or enjoy having a Hausmann. (Stay at home husband)
