American Student - Visas? Permessos?

I'm an American currently living as a tourist in Switzerland, and getting set to begin studies in Ticino in the fall. I live with my girlfriend, who is also an American student.

My girlfriend, after living here as a tourist for 2 months (and 3 months previously with a 1.5 month layover in between), applied directly for a Permesso L through the language school she was taking classes with. They set her up to live and study here until she changed schools, where she got setup with a Permesso B. She does not have a visa and has never submitted documents or her passport to an Swiss Embassy in America.

The school tells me that I must go through the Swiss Embassy in America to secure a student visa, which will take time and technically requires me to return to the states, as well as part ways with my passport for an extended period of time. Their preliminary response to my girlfriend's path to legal residence is puzzlement. I should probably also mention that this school is the same to which my girlfriend changed.

I'm confused about what is actually required of me, and why on earth it is going to be so much more difficult for me to stay here than it was for my girlfriend.

I would very much appreciate any insight or guidance regarding my situation. Thank you.

Re: American Student - Visas? Permessos?

No, you don't need to go back to US for the student permit. You can apply directly (after registration) at the foreigner office... you have to have financial proof prepared when you apply for the residence permit.

Welcome to Ticino!
