Question about mechanics of getting an entry visa for wife/kids

Hi, I'm an US citizen and my company is applying for a work permit for me
in Zurich. From reading the previous posts, I can specify which embassy
outside of Switzerland that I will go and get my work visa. And after getting
that work visa I can enter the country and register and get the actual work
permit. That is all fine.

My question is about the entry visa for my wife and kids. She's planning to
go on a 2 month trip outside the US while I move to Zurich, find an
apartment, get settled, etc before joining me. They may depart before I
get the work permit. If that is the case, can I go to the embassy with their
passports and mine to get the visa? Or does everybody have to be
physically there to get the visa?

We are dual citizens of another country so they can leave the country with
their second passports.

Or is this even an issue? They will be on a dependent visa with me. I
have to enter switzerland with the D visa and get the L/B work permit.
They can enter the country as US citizens without a visa. Can they enter
as tourists and then go to the gemeninde and get the dependent L/B
permit?

thanks,

DavidSJC

US citizens must enter and leave the US on US passports.

Anyway, the rest are all questions you must ask the Embassy. They really are the only ones to give you definitive answers.

The only advice I can give you is that you should be apply for all the permits together. It makes things much easier than applying later for your wife and child.
