Renewing Permit - Gemeinde or Migrationsamt?

I hate to open a new thread, but I just couldn't find the answer to my question (yep yep, I searched!).
My question is quite simple but it ended up putting me and my German roommate in a debate, so I thought "let's just go to englishforum.ch and find out"

I need to go (try to) renew my permit and I don't know where to go: should I go to the Gemeinde where I live or should I go to the Migrationsamt in Zürich?

Thanks in advance, guys!!

You apply to your Gemeinde Einwiohnerkontrolle who send the completed application to the Migrationsamt.

Actually, assuming you are on your Portuguese passport and hence EU you probably need do nothing - they will send you the forms at the appropriate time.

better go to them (gemeinde) and take affirmative action. In all sorts of ways you only find things out if you go and ask.

For anyone who has renewed their B permit (from EU) in ZH recently, do you get the new permit by mail or do you get a letter saying that you have to go to the Migrationsamt to fetch it?

Re: Renewing Permit - Gemeinde or Migrationsamt?

I got a letter, had to go to the Gemeinde office with a current photo. They tore up the old permit and gave me the new one.

Re: Renewing Permit - Gemeinde or Migrationsamt?

Gone are the days of paper permits. Since 2009, plastics are being issued and they are sent directly from Migrationamt by registered post.

Below is my experience so far (9 extensions)
a) approx 8 weeks before expiry : You receive a letter from Gemeinde / Kreisburo requesting you to visit them with below items
i) Passport
ii) existing permit
iii) money ( most important thing :-)
I am a paranoid person. So I visited them if the letter did not arrive exactly 8 weeks before (with passport, permit and of course money :-).

b) After you visit them (with or without the letter), they will take your application.

Basically, even if you go to migrationsamt, they will route you back to Gemeinde / Kreisburo.

Regarding receiving

Hope this helps.

Ours (EU) were renewed last year and are all still the large paper ones. It's only for non EU citizens that plastic permits are issued for the moment.
