Travelling during permit renewal...

Stupid question: When your permit is with the city hall/ migration office for renewal - is there a possibility for non-EUs to travel from and back to Switzerland? I believe the city hall gave me some sort of copy with a stamp on last time, but since I have an EU passport, nobody cared anyway... and experience with a certified copy of a residence permit?

Thanks!

I think it depends where you go and where you're from.

Coming back from Canada through London, with a Canadian passport and my Swiss daughter, I didn't have the paper with my appointment for renewal and they said reluctantly that they would have to stamp my passport, but never did.

I then got my paper with renewal appointment before I had to travel to Prague and they didn't even ask for my residency card or passport on entering switzerland (airport!). I think that within the Schengen they don't check at all.

I wasn't too worried since I knew that though it wasn't ideal, they would let me in anyway. If I came from Africa or South America I'm sure it would be more of a problem.

Good luck!

Thanks!

What paper was that exactly?

I am not asking for myself as my German passport works pretty much everywhere... for a colleague going to Asia - and my worries is not only the immigration, but especially the airlines... they tend to refuse to transport people if they don't recognize your documents.
