Help - B Permit expired and need to travel

Ok so this is all my fault

My husband has to travel to London on Monday for work

Our B permits expire on Monday

I was suppose to pick up our new b permits from the post office however missed by 1 day and it has already been sent back to BERN.

Any advice on what we can do so that my husband can get to his meeting on Monday??

Everytime he goes through immigration at the moment they remind him to get his b- permit in order.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you

My permit always seems to take 4 months to be renewed from my expiration date, and I've travelled dozens of times. I just explain it's being renewed and no one has given me any hassle, but I have a CDN passport. Not that it makes a difference, but you may get an immigration person who is more difficult with foreign people.

Honest is the best policy...plus the police here knows everything regarding foreigners. I would advise that if your husband gets stop by immigration on his way back, just tell them the truth and tell they that it's being sorted out. I am sure they can see your new B permit has been approved in the system anyway.

On Monday, I suggest that you call and explain the mistake, ask them to put a note in the file/system and ask them to resend again. In the past, I usually picked up my permit at my gemeinde. Only the letter to inform me was sent by post.

Re: Help - B Permit expired and need to travel

Looks like it might be too late to help, but it might help others: if you missed picking up your permit in the mail, that means it's already been renewed, you are in the system, all you're missing is the plastic card.

In this case you can go to the Migrationsamt (Cantonal migration office) and you can get a re-entry visa. Btw you can ONLY do this if your permit is already renewed ie. approved but not in your hands yet, which seems to be your case.

The visa you get is valid for Switzerland only (although it looks like a Schengen visa), they usually give it for like 3 months or something, and here's the stinger - it costs about 100 CHF. However getting it is really easy, you take one photo to the Migrationsamt, queue up, if you go mid-day usually you won't wait longer than 15 mins, and once at the counter your photo will be scanned & visa printed and stuck into your passport within 4-5 mins. You pay and off you go.

It's costly, but if you really need to travel, it's worth it, and you avoid any discussion with the immigration staff at the border/airport. And since it's a rather quick procedure, you can get it the day before or the day of your trip.

Re: Help - B Permit expired and need to travel

I did exactly what ethstudent said to do and it worked like a charm. They will give you the temporary visa in your passport as long as your visa was properly processed. Receiving a letter from the immigration office does not automatically mean that the visa was prolonged, I know from experience that they also send rejection letters by registered mail.

I hope it all worked out for you though!

Re: Help - B Permit expired and need to travel

Hi,

I am just wondering how it worked out for you? I am in a very similar situation, but a bit worse! (or a lot worse).

I need to travel for business in 2 weeks! BUT, my B-permit expires tomorrow. I never received a letter in the mail with the form to renew it (which I should have 3months ago according to what I have read in many threads in this forum). I was not aware that it takes time to renew it, and thought it is a matter of one visit to the Migrationsamt! I have two questions, which I am hoping you, or others, might have some experience to answer:

1- How long does it take to get the permit renewed? Does it have to be through the Gemeinde? Or can I just start it from the Migrationsamt to accelerate the process?

2- According to ethstudent (above):

"In this case you can go to the Migrationsamt (Cantonal migration office) and you can get a re-entry visa. Btw you can ONLY do this if your permit is already renewed ie. approved but not in your hands yet, which seems to be your case."

I am going to start my permit-renewal process on Monday. I am also going to try obtaining a re-entry visa from the Migrationsamt, the question is: is it possible, in any shape or form, to obtain the visa without having my permit-renewal approved?

I appreciate any help or advice, as I am in panic mode!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH in advance.

-Ban

see the thread below (specifically #6 and #13)
B permit (restricted) extension forms

I went to Migrationsamt and got re-entry visa before my extension was approved. I brought a copy of the application of extension that my employer has made with me. was very straightforward once at Migrationsmat with no question asked.
