HELP Getting My Work Permit (already approved)

Ok.....hopefully this is a dumb question, but I now now live in Switzerland (love it) and have rented a flat in Goldiwil (Canton of Bern). I have my D Visa for entry and my employer has submitted everything and my Work Permit is approved. I came over a bit earlier than expected and my employer is on holiday for 2 weeks. Now that I have taken up a residence, where do I go to get my work permit? What steps do I take? I thought that this would be sorted out, but it's not. I need the permit in hand to get a cell phone contract and purchase and register a car. Thanks.

Controle des habitants!
I think it's that in german:
Amt für Migration (Foreigners' Office)
At: Bümplizstrasse 97, 3018 Berne Tel: 031 387 38 38
Fax: 031 387 38 39
e-mail

But not sure, dont speak german.

PS: patience... it will take a month minimum.

But they will give you a certificate of registration.

Re: HELP Getting My Work Permit (already approved)

We just moved here in February and it seemed to take forever to get our cards. Have you registered with the local government already? If I remember correctly, we showed the people at the gemeidehaus my husband's work contract, our marriage certificate (not sure why they wanted proof we were married), our apartment rental agreement, and eventually our proof of medical insurance (we had our cards by then but we still needed to submit this). While there, we also filled out a form.

After that, we got a letter telling us to go to Thun to get our photos taken for our cards. Then weeks later, we finally got the letter stating we could go pick up our cards. It was a lengthy process.

In the mean time, you can get a pay as you go phone with Swisscom. As for buying a car... I didn't think you needed the residency card, but I might be wrong.

Good luck! Goldiwil is beautiful! We thought about living up there, but ultimately settled in Heimberg.

sorry to hijack, but I didn't want to start a new thread for a similar query.

Does this mean that if I move to Zurich in mid august, that it's not a problem to register as my employers admin has said
I only need all your details on September the 1st and the banc account details as well. Only after September 1 st, we will ask for the residence authorisation. Not one single day before.
and I was freaking out that I wouldn't be able to come over early to sort things out like opening a bank account, ordering cable and internet, buying medical insurence, paying the tv licence, getting my daughter settled at kinderkrippe and actually seeing the place I've moved too etc etc etc. You know, what with the having to register within 3 days of moving etc...... Or should I wait until I've seen personnel? Will the Swiss refuse me if I've not registered in three days?
By the way, I'm UK citizen, with a 12 month contract at the university, but I haven't got my copy yet.

Re: HELP Getting My Work Permit (already approved)

I don't think that it'll be a problem for you to register when you come in August. I don't know what it'll be like for a UK citizen, but as a US citizen, we had two weeks from the time of arrival to register with the local government. If the university is providing housing for you, then you'll already know which city (local government) to register with. You can go in and ask what kind of documentation that they require.

However, if you've been told that you need to register within three days, I would follow that. If you don't have all the documentation required, at least you've shown up to the office to fill out whatever forms are required. You can probably present the relevant documents to the gemeidehaus as they become available to you.

I think that coming over early to settle in is a good idea. You'll need the time to open a bank account, familiarize yourself with the city, get your daughter settled, etc. I don't think that you need to talk to personnel prior to coming. Although, you might need to show proof that you're employed by a Swiss employer prior to opening the bank account, etc (of course this is just speaking from my experience).

Good luck with your move!

Re: HELP Getting My Work Permit (already approved)

Thanks for all the help. I went to the Thun Commune and they took care of it. I will be "official" as of August 1st.
