When is the first day of unemployment classed as?

Hi all,
I was fired by my boss this weekend. I saw it coming to be honest so felt prepared. He's paying me my 2 months notice so that side of it is sorted. I have a list of links for various ORP offices in my canton and am aware of what they require. However, the ORP offices say I must report to them on "the first day of unemployment." Do they mean after my 2 months notice or as in TOMORROW? Only problem with tomorrow would be I am waiting for my letter of "termination" to be sent by registered post and think it'll take a week.

Many thanks to anyone who knows.

Re: When is the first day of unemployment classed as?

Hi cbb

Sorry to hear this. No, the first day of unemployment will be your first day you are effectively out of work, so after your actual termination date/notice period.

However, you are required at least three months prior your unemployment or from the day you know (if this is leass than three months as in your case) to make efforts to try and look for a new employment. They will probably ask you of a record of the job applications you will make from now until the first day of unemployment.

Good luck to you!

I would register now, there is nothing to loose as your employer has to give you any time you need off to find a new job!
I calculate your last day of work is Friday 30 August.

Hmm. My boss has said he'd pay me until the end of August too. I assumed that as he wrote my letter and said he'd terminated my contract on Saturday the 16th of July then then I would be paid as normal until then and THEN my 2 months (which is says in my contract i am entitled) of "notice payment" would take me until the 16th September. Oh no, wondered if he knew something I didn't If my last day of contract does turn out to be the end of August then I only have 6 weeks left instead of the 8 I'd assumed.

(I am a teacher so it was the day after the last day of term. I was fired by email)

Re: When is the first day of unemployment classed as?

Well I've been busy all morning trying to find a job so that I can avoid the RAV in 6 weeks. I am in the process of opening a website offering student tutoring. However, if I do this does anyone know how it's affect my RAV benefits? Would I then be classed a self employed and with a failing business or is it just accepted as me seeking work? Any help much appreciated as always.

Re: When is the first day of unemployment classed as?

They will have a RAV Info day where they explain all of this.
But generally if you are not 100% employed you will still get benefits.
There is a form you have to fill in every month for the RAV stating any extra income earned. They will deduct this from your RAV benefits using the 70/80% calculation. You would then clear a bit more as they try to make it worth your while to earn some money while unemployed.

If you don't go now & do the intro day in English, you screw up in your search requirements & be fined an extra week. They like to do that so ignore
my advice at your peril. Having been signed up with the RAV for 6 years I do have an insight!

You seem to already be doing the most important thing and that's looking for another job - hope you find one soon.

I went to the RAV before my notice period had run through and the woman put me onto the system but they didn't want to see me again until I'd actually left the company at the end of my notice period.

Having said all that, and from reading round this forum, RAVs can vary throughout Switzerland so check things out with your local one.
