Waiting for a Student visa

Every where it states atleast 8 weeks... Excatly eight weeks, the canton immigration wrote to me asking for some missing documents, which i swiftly provided the next day, with my sponsor( my employer) with Bank statements.

Now am wondering when thy are expected to get back to me, i need to sort out so many things and right now, i cant until i get the visa. Has anyone ever been in such a dilema. Do u have an idea how many days it will now take?

I still have some time though as my prgram starts Sept 15 at Uni Bern, Msc Economics

Re: Waiting for a Student visa

Hi sasay7,

Many of us in this forum are in the exact same position, and are worried that our visas won't be ready in time for the start of the semester (check out the ongoing thread "Studying under the table").

It seems like visa processing times vary greatly - I've read from others who have managed to get their visas in 5 weeks, by asking their university to apply pressure at the immigration office. The Swiss Consulate in Canada also advised me the same thing - they said there is no way to rush them here, but then once the application is sent to Switzerland your university can often intervene and request a rush from the immigration office.

Good luck!!

Re: Waiting for a Student visa

My classes start Sept 19th too, and I've only just gotten my visa application in. I'm going to take the gamble and fly to Switzerland next week, and then have the visa sent to Europe for me to pick up (the consulate in Montreal has agreed to this, though they've also said I'm "not really supposed to do it that way"). I've been told that Swiss universities are generally lenient in this regard, and the university itself has told me that they'll let me start classes while i wait for my visa.
There is some risk involved in this plan, and because of this many are choosing to defer their acceptance to the winter semester and wait until then to start classes.
Hope all goes well for you!

Re: Waiting for a Student visa

the last post was 5 years ago, but i still want to try to ask a question to everyone who got a student visa.

i applied for mine almost 8 weeks ago. the website of the embassy in vienna says that it takes usually 6 to 12 weeks, but i would really like to know how long it took for you to get that sacred piece of paper.

i am trying to convince myself that everything is going to be fine because it wasn't declined yet. i'm thinking that if it were to be declined, it would have happened by now. what do you think if this is a good sign? no one has asked for additional documents. i had prepared my application with a lot of scrutiny, in the end it was almost 2 kg of papers.

at least i know that it is beeing processed by the fremdenpolizei of bern.

Re: Waiting for a Student visa

hi!

i am basically in the same boat. this is week 9 and i still haven't heard anything from the consulate in istanbul. the consulate did not even say how i will be notified (email/ regular mail/ phone call), so I am anxiously waiting to hear. also since turkey has its own share of problems right now i wonder if this will affect the visa process. my classes begin on sep 19th too (uzh neuroscience msc.). i am considering emailing the school and asking them to contact the authorities in switzerland, but i don't know if this will help. any feedback would be much appreciated!

Re: Waiting for a Student visa

i got my email yesterday that i can study in switzerland!! it took 56 days, 22 hours and 30 minutes!

for everyone searching the internet frantically like i did: i am a european non-EU, attending the master in molecular life sciences courses at the university of bern with a bachelor degree from a drittstaat, no family in switzerland, finance regulated by getting a loan (darlehen) from 2 swiss charity foundations, room found on wgzimmer.com.

good luck everyone!

Re: Waiting for a Student visa

I was in a similar situation last year (different canton) so I called immigration three times and at last they realized if they didn't do anything I would be screwed (cannot start semester normally) so everything got solved in one week and I got my visa the next week from my last call...
My advice: calling immigration if possible to make sure they have opened your package, also contact school to intervene if immigration is reluctant to help.
