Question for visa waiver participants

This question is for visa waiver participants but where a visa is still required for taking up residence as a worker, spouse, student, etc.

Lots of threads around on whether one should follow the letter of the law and wait for the visa before coming or just apply for it, enter Switzerland, and collect the visa from Stuttgart or Paris.

Re: Question for visa waiver participants

We followed the rules, but I was told by our contact person at the Swiss Consulate General in Sydney that whilst the rules state that you should wait for the entry visa, she knew of people entering as tourists and then picking up their entry visa (we were told Munich).

The 'risk' was having to go back to Australia again to pick up the entry visa - a very long (and expensive!) way to go - and besides, we could not 100% guarantee that everything had been done correctly at the employers end of things, so we wouldn't take that risk.
