Student L Permit extention / renewal

Hi all,

I received my L permit today, which permits me to stay here in Zurich until 30.06.2012 - which is when my university exchange placement finishes.

However, I would like to spend an extra two months here during the Summer next year - although I won't be studying here then (no employment yet - but looking for internships etc.).

Is it possible to simply renew / extend my L permit without studying here any longer? (I understand that if I manage to get some work here this will help of course - but what if I am here unemployed simply as a tourist for next Summer?).

I appreciate your help!

Regards,
Lewis

You're British. Just register as a job seeker - you'll get a nice shiny B to replace your L.

Thank you, and obtaining a B Permit once does not effect applying for one again in the future, right? Even if no work was found (or even looked for) at the time of the first?

I'm asking as I'm considering coming back here in 3 years time to look for work after my studies.

Re: Student L Permit extention / renewal

I had a similar situation this year.
L-permit/ Exchange student/ + from a EU country
And wanted to stay some weeks longer. (not working)

So I thought it would be an easy case.

I went to my "kreisbüro" to asked if I could just stay a bit longer and they weren't sure - had to do some phone calls because of new regulations etc.

First: "Hmm.. you have to leave the country for two months before you come back."

Me:

In the end it wasn't a problem and I just had to give them a date when I would leave the country. So I could stay as a tourist a bit longer. They were really helpful, however it took them 30min give me a proper answer about the conditions. Also I could observe that it relys always a bit on the employee, some were very helpful, others acted more restrictive.

With regard to this experience (and seeing that you are already in Zurich) I would recommend you to ask the employees at the Kreisbüro about your various options, additionally. In this way you are familiar with the newest 'developments' concerning your case. Especially when you're interested in a longer extension of your stay and plan to work.

I wish you the best for your stay! I enjoyed Zurich a lot.

If you have questions about student life (Zurich on budget etc.) feel free to ask me.

PS: Forgot to say. I decided at the Kreisbüro to deregister and stay as a tourist, but another option was to apply for an extention of the L-permit by saying that you still have university stuff to do. In latter case you have to give reason (e.g. exams, writing a paper etc.).You have to wait for an answer in that case, the Kreisbüro can't tell you directly if it will be approved.
