non-EU B/work permit applications and imminent travel

The following may resemble a few other recent posts, but has its own twists:
I am a non-EU with a B permit due for renewal in 6 weeks.
Separately from this, my university offered me a p/t job to commence in September. They applied for a work permit (10 weeks ago)- apparently, an ‘employment service’ approved of this application subject to this being approved by the service de la population. The first week of October is the latest by which I should commence my work (or else they will have to find someone else). And since no one seems to know about this process, can anyone throw any light: is this the final step or are more ‘approvals’ in order?
My commune recommended submitting the B permit extension now and that the canton could merge this with my work permit dossier. The process was stated to take 1-3 months.
To add to the confusion, I have to fly over to the UK in early November to attend my sister’s wedding. I will have to reapply for a UK visa, but I might (potentially) be without a physical evidence of the residence/work permit (since it takes 1-3 months for the card). Any solutions?

Dunno of it'lll be of any help but while I was waiting for my permit to be issued I had to travel and the Service de population... issued a Swiss visa for me for the period of the travel so that I could return to the country. So you may want to call to the same Service in Lausanne maybe and ask for their advice what to do.

I'm not sure of exact details, but I flew to the UK for a week, 3 days after landing here. In those few days was when I applied for my permit B. Upon arriving back at Basel airport, we simply told the border control that my permit was in application- I think they had a look in their system & saw it there- and let me in.

I too had to travel while my permit was being processed. It was scheduled to be posted to me two days after I left. I spoke with the Migrationsamt and they said if it didn't turn up in time, I could get a return visa from them on the spot by paying Fr. 90-something.
