Hi all,
I am going to work in Basel (company location, travel is expected though) but consider to live in Zurich with a friend (sharing costs).
I have the following questions:
1. Do companies normally have a problem with that (live in another canton)? If not, how my company will know to deduct from my salary zurich based tax, although the company is based in Basel? (I presume I must submit to HR a paper of residence??)
2. If then I change my mind, is it easy process to change canton of residence from Zurich to Basel?
3. Transportation. I know is about 1 hour by train from Zurich to Basel. Are there cases where trains do not operate for some reason? (ie. very bad weather, strikes etc). Then which other alternative do I have?

The trains always operate. The only alternative is by car, not to be undertaken lightly in rush hour.
Don't forget to add on the door to door bit. So you have to get to the train station your end, and to your desk this end.

Basel is a nice place to live though, maybe you should consider it?

i'm thinking of doing the same. you have to tell the company where you live and they'll withhold tax accordingly.

Train services are highly dependable - no worries there. Even if you were to join some Basel workers living in Dietikon ZH, you will have reliable hi-speed trains to Basel SBB - same train plies the Zürich airport route too.
