About to graduate and trying to look for work

Hi all,

So I have read some posts and had also talked with my HR department before leaving my internship, but still a little unsure of how confident I should be or how difficult the road is ahead of me.

My question is, how difficult is it for an American who has (within a month) graduated with a masters in marketing from Lugano to find a job here in Switzerland?

I speak German pretty well, but on paper I have up until a B1 level. I also have had about 1.5 years practical experience and am 24. I have applied to quite a few places but have also been turned down quite a few times because of various reasons, mainly permit related.

I just want to know if it is really difficult to hire me (permit wise and so) and how long, theoretically, I should look before starting to search outside of Switzerland?

Any and all advice would be great.

Thanks!

How long will your residence permit allow you to stay after you graduate? Surely you should be looking at all options rather than just possible Swiss ones?

Re: About to graduate and trying to look for work

Well like a good portion of the foreigners in Switzerland I do have a love interest in staying here, so no, I have not started to look anywhere but Switzerland. We are not wanting nor really planning on getting married (and I know that makes it easier) but I wanted to know the realistic probability of getting a job here not as my Swiss boyfriend's wife. Meaning, can I please have more time to test the relationship waters while having a job or is it not really possible?

Re: About to graduate and trying to look for work

I know what you mean.
I spent a lot of time coming and going as a tourist in Switzerland while I was test driving my poor hub, (now I just drive him crazy!).
I really found it hard to find work as what I wanted to do was difficult to obtain a permit for, not exclusive enough and too many locals or residents with permits capable of doing it.
In my case, and at that time, marrying wouldn't have really improved things so I was just careful to not jeopardise my rights to be here by overstaying my welcome.

Hi Tara,

I have the same problem as you. I'm non-EU, I just graduated from Bern and find some opportunities in Zurich. But in order to get that chance, I'd rather apply for a work permit on my own instead of marring my EU boyfriend, although I know it would make things easier...
