Hi, I am a US citizen with a working L permit that will expire in 2012, 1 year from the time I moved here. My co worker told me that they are getting more strict with the renewal process for foreigners. His Canadian friends were actually given a language (writing and oral) exam by the red cross. They must pass the exam to have their permits renewed. They are in Zürich.

Does anyone have more info on this? Is it varied by Kanton?

Also, I did a search and someone said the L permit can be renewed for up to 2 years. Is this true? so when I apply for a renewal, I can apply for a 2 year L permit? is it a simple process or will I have to jump through loop holes?

The Red Cross are not the Swiss government and have no control over work permits.

Maximum 2 years. You had 1 year. You get 1 year more.

B renewal is difficult, but I dont think it needs any language tests.
