i just started working here in switzerland last month... part of the job is to work on a project at customer's site overseas for a period lasting 3 months per trip.. i was told by a colleague that i mustn't exceed 6 consecutive months outside of switzerland or else my B-permit will be cancelled.. in addition to this "rule", any other things that i need to be aware of?

You were informed correctly - you cannot stay abroad more than 6 consecutive months. It would work in your favor to travel back to CH for weekends during those 3 months. Also, you would need to keep your home here. Regarding other considerations, you might also want to have an extension of your health insurance so you are covered abroad.

In general, it would be a good idea to check what are the specific rules of the country you are staying regarding permits, visas, health insurance, other types of insurance you might need.

Actually it will not be canceled if you can proof that you didn’t stay in any other country longer than in Switzerland for a counted year in case you been away for more that six consecutive months.

Not at all. There is no minimal in year stay requirements, only absence over six consecutive months is a matter.

The other point is that permanent residents are under same obligations. In contrast to EU where it’s 12 consecutive months.

And even then you have the right to proof that you stay longer in a Switzerland than in any other country. Technically you can leave immediately after receiving permit and be back after almost 11 months for renewal. If you proof that you stay in 11 countries for less than a months in every country with a stamps in your passport, they must take it in to account of your main place of residence concept. Some lump-sum taxation residents visiting for renewal only.
