Travel with temp residence permit

A couple of us were planning to travel to Italy by train next weekend but we don't have the residence permit as yet. We all have applied for it and we were given a temporary document to verify that we have applied for it. We all are on the Swiss student visa and not the Schengen Visa.

Is it safe to travel with the temporary document that was issued to us?

The document says "Meldebestätigungfür ausländische Personen" (Certificate of registration for foreign persons)

I would wait for my permit to arrive.

Re: Travel with temp residence permit

You should go and get a return visa stamped on your passport from the migration office. That will allow you to travel to Italy

Did you guys receive a D type Visa? The one on which you "first" entered Switzerland. I read somewhere that a multiple entry D type visa let's you travel in the schengen region. I remember doing that when I was waiting for my aufenhaltstitel the first time around, about 2 years ago. but please verify this claim before doing your own thing

Have fun!

Re: Travel with temp residence permit

From the website: http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleases...guiLanguage=en

"Third-country nationals holding a long-stay visa issued by a Member State are allowed to move freely in the territory of Member States under the same conditions as the holder of a residence permit.

The Visa Code will abolish the "D+C" visa (i.e. a long stay visa allowing the holder to circulate in the territory of Member States the first 3 months of his stay on the basis of the national long stay visa).

Because of the abolishment of the D+C visa a new Regulation amending the Convention Implementing the Schengen Agreement and Regulation (EC) No 562/2006 as regards movement of persons with a long-stay visa has been drawn up and is to apply at the same date as the Visa Code.

The Regulation will allow third-country nationals holding a long-stay "D" visa issued by a Member State to move freely in the territory of Member States for 90 days in any 180-day period, under the same conditions as the holder of a residence permit.

This will put an end to the difficulties third-country nationals had to face when legally staying in a Member State on the basis of a D visa and would restore the basic philosophy underlying the area without internal borders, i.e. that a person can travel within that area for short stays with the document on the basis of which he or she is legally present in a Member State."

Can i trust this? If this is still valid then I guess I can leave Switzerland as I do have a type D Visa

When in doubt call the immigration department. Or maybe make an appointment and visit them.

If you have a valid multiple entry type D visa you can travel on it.

If the visa you currently have says single entry then you need to get a return visa done, which is basically a fresh type D visa

Re: Travel with temp residence permit

I have a multiple entry one and I read on the Italian embassy website that "Long sojourn or "national" Visas (NV), which are only valid for visits that are longer than 90 days (type D), with one or more entries, in the territory of the Schengen State whose diplomatic mission issued the visa. Holders of type D visas are permitted to circulate freely in Schengen countries other than the issuing one for a period of not more than 90 days per half-year and only if the visa is valid."

So I am sure that it won't be a problem now
