ETH Student - Obtaining Visa for Spouse

I was recently accepted into ETH Zurich and had a quick question about obtaining a visa for my wife. Presently we're both US citizens living in America and want to obtain visas for the upcoming Fall.

Is there a way for my wife to piggyback on my student visa, or will she be required to have a completely independent visa? What's the best way to approach this process? Thanks in advance for the help!

Yes, she can. Your wife will also be able to work. You may also work up to 15 hours a week.

Have a look at this link for more information about applying a visa for you:

The ETH should be able to help you there too.

Best,

Re: ETH Student - Obtaining Visa for Spouse

She can apply for a family regroupment visa (B Permit). I followed my student spouse and am theoretically allowed to work. Finding a job is another matter. Good luck!

Re: ETH Student - Obtaining Visa for Spouse

Thanks for the info! I found info on family reunion visas on the Swiss embassy website and it looks like it should do the trick. For anyone else who might be looking, here's a link with some info: http://www.eda.admin.ch/etc/medialib...y_template.pdf

Actually is not as clear-cut as you make it be - family reunion is awarded on a discretionary basis for students.

Thanks for the head's up. What kind of things do they take into account when making a decision? Is there anything we can do to improve our chances?

Well the most important is what type student you are - if you are doc / postdoc, then you are going to be remunerated, allowing you to cover for your wife's presumable expenses, so in that case it will depend on your actual remuneration and the kind of lodging you'll be able to afford on it.

If you're a Bachelors or Masters student, the reunion is usually denied as they'll deem you'll barely have the financial resources to see after yourself, let alone a dependant.

Re: ETH Student - Obtaining Visa for Spouse

My wife has an online business and does most of her work from home. As such, she's not strictly a dependent. Is that something we can specify during the visa process?

As far as the Swiss authorities are concerned she IS dependent on you as she has no job in Switzerland. IF she wishes to carry on working then she has to apply for a permission for that first and it's a different procedure than applying as a dependent.

What procedure is required for that? She wouldn't be hired by a Swiss employer, so I didn't think a work visa was appropriate, but I could be mistaken.

As long as you carry on gainful employment out of Switzerland you need a permission - regardless if it is for a Swiss employer or working on your own as a "sole trader".

To get that visa she needs to go through the whole procedure laid down in the NonEU work permits sticky... i.e among others provide documentation of turnover guaranteeing enough funds to live on.
