Student visa for minors

My situation is that I'm a British citizen married to a Brazilian and we are in the process of adopting her niece and 2 nephews (in fact, the adoption of one of the nephews has just gone through so there are now two outstanding).

I hope to get a job in the Zurich region by the summer, by which time the two unadopted children will be 6 and 8. Here in the UK, the situation is pretty straightforward and student visas can be obtained by sending them to an "approved" fee-paying school. This makes sense as plenty of overseas kids are sent to study at UK private schools by parents living overseas. My question is, does the same apply in Switzerland?

Does anyone have experience of this situation?
Whom should I speak to?
Can anyone recommend either a public or private entity that can give me a definitive answer?

All help extremely gratefully received!!!

Re: Student visa for minors

I can't help on the definitive answer part but can answer two questions:

Do your best to make sure the adoptions have gone through before you come to Switzerland, as the Swiss authorities are very strict about which adoptions they will accept from people already here (it is common practice for a lot of families to do "economic" adotpions where the established Swiss family member "adopts" a sibling's kids, and so the authorities but strict rein on that) but it is easier to bring in kids whose adoptions are alreay completed

If students are boarding at an international school, they will get a student visas and not family reunification visas as is the case for adoptees. Like the UK, it has to be an approved international school. The good news is that these student visas are reasonably easy to get should you have any issues getting family reunification visas for them.

Re: Student visa for minors

Thanks, Nicole.

You mention that visas will be issued for kids at international boarding schools. Is the boarding element crucial? I would only want them at a day school. I had been hoping to send them to an SIS as the bilingual element would offer them a less stressful transition to german speaking.

Re: Student visa for minors

You can send them to SIS or any other bilingual school such as www.taz-horgen.ch, etc.

However, do you have custody for the two not yet adopted children? This would help.

You suggest you contact the Migration department in Zurich: http://www.ma.zh.ch/internet/sicherh...e/kontakt.html

There does not seem to be an English version but on this link you can find the email address and I would just write to them in English explaining your situation.

Good luck.

I'm not sure if they can get a student permit without the boarding element, but they don't have to board with the family reunification permit

The best thing would to be to call the guidance counselor at SIS and ask if day students can have student permits When I worked in a boarding school I seem to remember one student who had a student permit but lived outside. However, that was almost seven years ago...
