How to prove that I have been living in GE for some years?

Dear all,

I need an advice. Being a holder of a carte de legitimation in Geneva, I will soon be changing the job and probably the canton. Is there a way of getting some official proof that I have been living here for 4 years in order to facilitate further applications for permits/naturalization?

Thank you in advance!

Your tax return and your compulsory health insurance?

Re: How to prove that I have been living in GE for some years?

grynch, yes it does, however, if I quit, they take the card and there is no official confirmation that I had one. Moreover I had several consequent cards and I doubt that a photo copies are enough for bureaucrats, aren't they?

Odile, as a holder of carte de legitimation I never paid any taxes and was insured automatically by the international organization. There are tax certificates and insurance slips, but they have no Swiss addresses as they are issued electronically. Would those pdfs be of any good for someone?

Contact your community, they should be able to issue you with a confirmation of residence (at a cost, of course)

Re: How to prove that I have been living in GE for some years?

glowjupiter, thanks, but this is also pretty vague - I was subletting for a couple of years, so my current rental contract is only from 2011.

Sbrinz, eng_ch, thank you, it seems to be what I am looking for. Have you ever got one? What is the official name for this paper and does it include dates?

All details of when you entered Switzerland, what permits you were issued will be in the immigration records system. I doubt future permits will depend on you needing to furnish proof since any cantonal immigration office will be able to look this up themselves if required.

You have to go to the office cantonal de la population for this information, procure a certificate of employment (attestation) from your current and previous employer or fill-up the form below to request it for a fee.

Is there an option of getting someone with the appropriate authority to sign a photocopy of the document? In Australia a "Justice of the Peace" can do this.

I don't see why your 'international organization' can't help you with this.

He wants proof of residency, so this should come only from the host country. The organization can only provide employment certificate to backup his residency here together with copies of his carte de legitimation.

Kosti, thank you. I come from a very bureaucratic country where there is a saying that one is nobody without a document. While I clearly understand that immigration office 'might' have my details, it can be me, who must furnish all the documents. That is why I am asking the question.

Thank you for the advice. This attestation will only say that I have been living in Switzerland since the day I specify *myself*. And it is explicitly mentioned in the document. That is why I wonder if this is the only way of proving something.

Exactly, and having a copy of carte doesn't imply, that I was living in Switzerland all the time.

Thank you all once more, I will try to get some information from the commune as it seems to be that it is not a common case I am trying to solve

The immigration office KNOWS how long you have been in the country. Not "might". I think we are all confused about what you are trying to do and why you need this information. If it's for immigration, they KNOW how long you've been here.

Why - you really think you can put any date on it and they will just stamp without checking?

Your case is 100% common - I don't know why you like to think it's not.

If you're non EU the residency proof you seek will be worthless when you (actually your employer) applies for a job permit for you. If you're EU the proof of residency is irrelevant and superfluous. As far as naturalisation is concerned... that's still eight years down the road for you.

The fact that nobody answered me where to get a document and where to go makes me thinking that it is not common. Please prove me wrong and tell me which documents I will need in eight years as I am trying to get them now and to have them in advance.

I have this attestation and I put a random date there as I needed it for something else. Réside sur le territoire de notre canton depuis XX Janvier 2008 (date indiquée par l'intéressé) - that is what written there. So it is not my assumption, but reality.

Thank you again for the explanation, I only wanted to ask if I need to do something having current carte de legitimation in the pocket. I was asked to return it, that is why I am wondering if it is worth getting some documents now.
