Can someone please help me to understand this Type D visa?

Dear all, my partner just received her type D visa to join me as family reunion, she is non EU. The visa says it's valid only until mid of June, but I understand type D is for long term stay right? Wonder why it is only valid less than 90 days? However it also says the Duration of stay is XXX days, does this mean indefinite days? I am bit confused with those statements on the visa, or, will she get a permit to allow her stay for longer after her entry? Can someone please help me to understand these?

Thanks in advance.

This is an entry visa. She can enter until that time. Then when she gets here, you all go to the commune together and apply for her resident permit.

Does the consulate really not explain these things? Tsk tsk to them if this is true!

MiniMia, I think your answer does make sense. I will give them a ring on Monday to double check this. Thank you very much.

Re: Can someone please help me to understand this Type D visa?

Hi M8s,

I am a visiting student, who will attain EPFL to participitate in a Research Project for 6 months, I have applied for Swiss visa in my home-town and obtained the visa of 'Type D'. However, in the visa it written as my visa is valid for 3 months, from December to February, and also the duration of stay has edited as 'XXX'.
I have asked the Generale Consulate stuff, and they told me that this validaton is only for entiring the area, after i arrive, i have to set-up my duration of stay at Immigration Office of Vaud Canton with residence permit. And also i saw this post. My questions are:
1) Is this true?
2) Can the ''later-to-be-obtained-residence-stay'' exceed the validation of visa. I mean, is it possible for the duration of stay to be longer than validation of visa?

Thanx for all the help. Have a nice day. >.<

1. Yes. The D visa is an entry visa. It only give you the right to enter the country. You have three months to enter the country.
2. Yes. Once you arrive you go to the commune where you are living/staying and apply for your resident visa. You will most likely get an L permit that is valid for 1 year.

Re: Can someone please help me to understand this Type D visa?

Hello Gyochan,

you can find answer to your questions in:
EU and non-EU Permits, Schengen, Naturalisation.

Otherwise, here some answers:
1) Seems true. Why not trusting the consulate staff?
2) This is the point. The visa is not a residence permit, but allows you to get one. There is no reason the visa should be valid for your whole stay.

Hope this help,

Good luck

Re: Can someone please help me to understand this Type D visa?

As your partner, assuming she, is going to be with you and under Visa D family reunification, wihch applies for couples wishing to marry: Swiss, non swiss. The D visa is valid for 3-4 months, or 90 days in this case. Xxx: multiple entery allowed, she can come and exit, after 90 days, if no registration is done, she needs to go back. I think this is more of a grace period they give to couples here to see if they want to still live together.
