Sudden change of requirement for a student/intern visa

Hi all,

A young friend of ours, an American university student from the U.S., is coming to EPFL to do a paid internship this summer. She will be here 85 days and she was told she needed to file for a visa. She filed everything and paid her money over 2 months ago with the Swiss consulate in San Francisco.

Her mom has been calling to find out when the visa would be ready since the student is scheduled to arrive here June 15th. The recent responses from the Swiss consulate have been that they need to follow up with EPFL, which they have done. Now, out of the blue, EPFL is telling her she does not need a visa after all.

Needless to say, the student is concerned that she will have problems with immigration when she arrives. EPFL says she can always say she is staying with family (actually, she'll be staying with us - friends.) I understand that she can stay here on a tourist visa up to 90 days, so should she be concerned about this?

Thanks!

If she is paid she needs a visa.

Thanks, Shorrick. I now have a copy of the email which says:
Je confirme que, selon information reçue du Service de l’emploi et du Service de la population, les personnes qui viennent faire un stage, et qui sont "diplômantes" (en train de faire un Bachelor ou un Master), de nationalité Américaine, peuvent venir sans autre, sans visa.
The money she is receiving, which is minimal, is called a fellowship. Is it possible that this is not considered "pay"?
