Apologies if this is the wrong thread, I opted for this one as it mentioned government, which I think is closest to what this falls under, as is not quite a complaint/rant as such.
Anyways, so yesterday I received a letter from the above titled "department".
Meine Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut so I had to translate what seemed to be the key info for this letter and the demand to pay 280CHF was clear. The text translated to something along the lines of "Depositing/disposal of waste on public or private property outside of landfill"
I was confused, as I had no idea to what this related to. Anyways, I noticed the letter was dated March and also that it had my old address as the reference of the criminal act.
So i phoned this department and queried as to what this was about. I am told that I had disposed of waste, and that letters of mine were found in the waste and thus, its my waste, and thus I need to pay the fine.
I havent lived at that poperty for nearly a year I told. "well we had tried to deliver this letter in January" she said. Even still, thats 5 months after I left I told her.
I started thinking back and two things occured to me 1.) Cablecom spent months swithching my address and kept not getting post to my new address and thus potentially had sent things there 2.) When I went past my old address recently I noticed my name was still on the post box and door. (god knows how the people living there now get their post, and I didnt think to take it down when I left as assumed the new tenants would put their name up as I was made to immediately when i moved there).
So I said to these people that I suspect what has happened here is post was being sent there after I left, despite me taking the necessary actions to advise of my new address to cablecom, and deregistering and reregistering with old and new kantons, updating bank etc. And that someone has dumped this stuff with my letters that I never received with it.
She got the police file and phoned me back as they take copies of the letters. She asked me when I had moved, and I told her my contract was from 15 August, but I had moved in on 12th over the weekend. So she says, "oh, well all these letters are after that date, so I do believe you". I explained that address was opposite the a recycle place and I had always disposed of waste either through recycle or zuri-sacks and never had any issue for 8 months while i was there so why would i suddenly do this.
Anyways, she told me to object but couldnt promise anything and I am now waiting on the reponse based on my letter that explains the facts of the situation.
Now, I have heard of the rubbish police going through bins and trying to indentify whose it is when not disposed of correctly, which is evidently what has happened here, but surely this is not right in this situation.
Anyone had any experience of this? As there are a few things I do need to dispose of soon, quite bulky stuff, and what stopping me dumping it along with a letter I manage to pull from someones post box, which lets be honest is easy enough to do if you were that weird. Someone would get huge surprise and be completely innocent of any wrong doing.
Or am I to assume the Swiss authorities will view this as my responsibilty to ensure no post is sent to my old address, despite icompetent cable companies (which was by the way the said post), remove name tags, perhaps make periodic checks, and take it as a lesson learned?
