Solothurn Information Post

I thought I would drop some information regarding our experiences, if anyone in the future needs info on Solothurn Canton. This is information only for this Canton, others will differ.

Some background first, I am an American Citizen, and my wife (then fiance) is a Swiss National. We decided for me to come here, as after discussing things we A) Did not want any future children growing up in the states and B) I was less rooted (she is a museum educator, and her career and interests just really aren't transferable).

Any who, we had been engaged for a year and a half. I came here on a Tourist Visa in late March, and we got married on that Visa in late May. The documents needed for that:

Birth Certificate < 6 months old (translation wasn't needed, but we got it anyways)
Affidavit of me being single from the Bern Embassy. A note: you will need to go no their website, and set a date online. You cannot just show up. Do not take your cellphone, bags, or anything like that with you because they will not let you take them in.
Passport

It took two weeks for the documents to clear, and then you have 90 days to set a date. This was in Olten. The fee to marry was 450 Franks, if you want to marry elsewhere they will refund you part of it to do so (I forgot the amount, I think like 300 franks). They were very helpful, and the people in the office spoke perfect English.

Just an aside, but they did a wonderful job. And the lady in question was so very excited to be able to recite a poem in English. It was a wonderful service.

Now on to the permit.

We applied for the permit around June 7th, due to various time constraints. The documents that were required were surprisingly minimal. Thus

From me:
Our Marriage Certificate
My passport

A letter from the FBI stating I had no past history (An aside, thank you very much EF!!)

From her:
Proof of employment (last two salary statements)
Contract or lease on apartment (they require you having more than one room)
Debt record

After two weeks we received a letter back, which kind of miffed us, asking several questions. I.E. do I speak German, where did we meet, how long have we known each other, do I have family. Often it would ask the questions two or three different ways. We found out later it was standard.

Time passed, and we were a bit worried, as the end of my three months stay were coming to a head. We called the Solothurn Migration office, and were informed that as long as we have a request pending, I did not have to leave. And if I did have to leave for any reason, they would acquire us another sort of visa to re-enter.

Soon we were notified via letter that we needed to visit the Solothurn office to get my biometric permit, and we had 14 days to apply. The price they informed us could be anywhere from 100-1000ch, mine was 100, it all depends on the work they do.

After that, they mail you your permit within 7-10 days.

Hopefully this may help someone else down the road, should you decided to re-unite in Switzerland. As it were, I will say this, the entire process was for the most part, painless, and straight forward. Cheers!

Re: Solothurn Information Post

Evening Elena,

Well, I got the birth certificate and translation before I came there, took about 3 weeks. The FBI record I also ordered well before I came, that took three months, and arrived when I was there (I came there around 3/30).

On my wife's side the employment took her one day, the other records a couple of weeks. They told us originally the application would only take ten days, it ended up taking two weeks for a letter to come asking for more information. I got my permit on 7/11, having submitted it around 6/1-6/7, sorry I forgot the exact date.

I haven't found a job yet, I work in Accounting, and I am heading to RAV sometime fairly soon. On that part I can't really advise too much yet.

Hey there, Ten days is really nothing. It took me up to three weeks - but during that time they will let you stay as long as it is in process.
