My father is Swiss so how do I obtain a passport?

Hello there!

My father is Swiss and left there to move to Canada with his parents when he was 10. It is my understanding that since he is Swiss, that automatically makes me Swiss as well. I am interested in obtaining a Swiss passport but my father has not kept up with his own paperwork. What would I need to do, any insight? I assume the first steps would be to get my father's citizenship reinstated? What steps would he need to take? He has been in Canada for over 50 years now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!!

Sincerely,
Heidi Hugli

Welcome to the forum.

If your father is able to, reach the Embassy:

http://www.eda.admin.ch/canada.html

They can advise on what to do.

Alternatively:

Thank you for your reply. I just read online that a foreign born child must be registered before the age of 22 or they lose rights to their Swiss citizenship. Pretty sad since I am now 39....

There maybe exceptions, best investigated first with the Embassy.

Some threads for reading up:

Citizenship question

reinstatement of swiss citizenship

Family Naturalization -> Good News!

They might need your dad´s Heimatschein / Wohnsitzwechsel document.

Re: My father is Swiss so how do I obtain a passport?

The most important thing is to know the exact Heimatort/Lieu d'origine of your father. Then pass it on to the embassy. Just because it is not automatically anymore doesn't mean that it is impossible. It's such a direct family tie and emigration was only 50 years ago.

I've never understood whether the official word in German is Heimatort or Bürgerort, people I ask don't agree... mystery unsolved yet.

Per the swiss passport, they use Heimatort.

That's for it to be automatic. You're not automatically a citizen any more but you can apply for "facilitated naturalization". A search on that will get you tons of information. Your biggest hurdle will be showing ties to Switzerland. They don't joke around about that! You need lots of ties to Switzerland.

Also, it's unlikely he needs to "reinstate" his citizenship. But probably just get updated documents. As others have said, you need to find he's "commune d'origine".

Good luck.

If having the most Swiss sounding name was the main criteria, you would be a prized applicant!
