Applying for Permit-B on a British passport... can I leave Switzerland?

Hello!

I have just started the application for a Permit-B with the school I am studying at, and hold a British (EU) passport. I've been told that I cannot leave Switzerland for the first two months, approximately the time it takes to recieve this permit. I've also been told this may not be true for EU citizens.

Can someone confirm? ...am i allowed to leave Switzerland (to go to Italy/France, so still in Schengen.) during the application process?

I'd be crossing over to France/Italy on the roads rather than the airports and my [relatively limited] experience is that they usually give me and my motorbike a look (customs reasons I presume) rather than immigration formalities (as Switzerland is in Schengen).

Many thanks!

Of course you can. Who told you that ridiculous nonsense. EU citizen freedom of movement right can't be affected by permit application.

Thanks.... I know like it seems like nonsense! Especially when I know they wave you/just look at you and that's it, at the borders. I guess it could be something the school are telling me, but it refers to those from other parts of the world who don't hold EU passports!

Thanks!

As an EU passport holder, you don't even need a visa to officially "move to Switzerland" for the purpose of taking up residency and work.

On top of that, the only passport control points Switzerland currently maintains are at the airports in Geneva, Zurich and Basel.

Maybe Bern and Valais Cantonal Police forces have some officers checking passports at Bern and Sion Airports for the occasional direct flights to the UK (non-Schengen).

Since it applies to non-EU students, I guess the college applies the same rules to all students.

Oh and yes, you can leave, I don't recall having to surrender my UK passport or anything like it.

Thanks brusch, jonbvn and Homer

Going to pop over onto the other side of Lac Leman to have a visit this afternoon then, perhaps (on my motorbike, rather than by boat)

Homer, are you from London? Fullers brewery is really close to where I live!
