Swiss student visa

Hello,

I am an American planning to study for a Master's in Translation at the University of Geneva. I applied for the student visa and they requested more information. Mainly about my finances, but the part that has me stumped (and worried) is that they want to know why I want to study at the University of Geneva since the degree program is offered in the U.S. How do I answer this question? Am I reading too much into why they are asking me this question?

Thanks!

Re: Swiss student visa

Geneva is an international city and the potential experience plus exposure cannot be matched in the US etc.

Possibly it is part of their risk assessment.

When we were applying for my daughter's student visa we also had to submit a letter explaining why she wanted to come to Zurich to study German. In her case, we were advised to explain:

(1) What was her motivation for attending the German language school?
(2) Why did she pick a school in Zurich specifically? Why Zurich?
(3) What degree was she after?
(4) What other language learning experience(s) did she have?
(5) What are her goals for the future? What does she plan to do with this 'know-how'?

My daughter is fresh out of high school and doesn't have clue what she wants to be when she grows up but, with a little creativity, we were able to craft a reasonable letter.

You are way ahead of her in that regard and I'm sure you have very good reasons why you want to attend the University of Geneva. Good luck!

Re: Swiss student visa

Thanks guys for your answers. I just thought that maybe they were trying to single me out for some bizarre reason. The reason why I want to study in Geneva (honestly) is because the tuition cost alone is way cheaper than studying the same program here in the U.S., but I don't want to say that to the authorities. Aside from the cost, UNIGE is the number one place for future translators to study and because I want a career with the U.N., I figured Geneva would be a good place to start!

Now to make that sound professional...

Thanks again!
