Working permit - Customary meeting - Geneva Canton- Any thoughts?

First of all, thanks for reading my (first) post. I have been around this forum and I found it very useful. I could not find a thread tackling my question, so here it goes.

I am a Non- Eu from sunny Southamerica (land of tango, asado and Malbec to be more specific )

I was hired by an international (non Swiss) bank to work in Geneva.

The contract is already signed and my prospective employer lodged the working permit docs on July 30.

My (possible) start date is October 1.

Last Friday I followed up with the HR to find the status of my permit and I was told that they were requested a meeting by the Office Cantonal de la Population to discuss my case. The meeting is scheduled for next week (I was not been informed about the exact date though). HR people told me that this is a customary meeting and the immigration officials did not want to advance anything about the WP status and everything would be discussed on that meeting.

To the Non/EU who had applied to a B permit, any clue on what is this meeting about? I have not found anything mentioning a customary meeting on the forum. Just for your information, my prospective employer hired legal advisors to handle my permit and I was told that all the dossier was complete ( all the documentation in place, nothing missing). In addition, I think that my case is pretty strong, thats being said, very difficult to find a person with my expertise within the EU or in Switzerland itself. It is also a Senior position, I have 10+ experience in the field.

Any input? I am pulling my hair out, so scary!! Thanks to all / muchisimas gracias a todos

Thank you guys! Hopefully some EFers (From Geneva or any other Swiss canton) share their experiences. FIrst time that I hear of a mandatory status meeting during a WP application process. At least, it was not mentioned in any threads I found on this website. Saludos. I./

Re: Working permit - Customary meeting - Geneva Canton- Any thoughts?

Update on my WP process. Yesterday, the immigration lawyers received a letter from the GVA Canton approving my application (demande d'autorisation de sejour a l'annee- permit B, avect activite lucrative). This was exactly 6 weeks after lodging the dossier and 1 week after the customary meeting. I also received a copy of that letter, signed by the authorities. Now my dossier has been forwarded to the FOM for the second step in the process. I read somewhere in this forum that normally it takes from 1 week to 3 weeks to receive feedback from Bern, but this was from a post of a couple of years ago, hopefully no more than 3 weeks...

Question: Is this the regular open B (open) Permit? Should it be renewed annually?

Saluditos a todos y chin chin (prost/sante/salud) on me!

Re: Working permit - Customary meeting - Geneva Canton- Any thoughts?

Congratulations on getting your permit granted.

The Swiss have clamped down recently on permit quotas for non EU country applicants so I expect it was a meeting where the company had to lay out for the authorities exactly why they couldn't find a Swiss or EU applicant to fill the position with your level of expertise. It would be pretty customary I would think in that until recently Swiss companies had to get permission to issue B and other types of permits to foreigners for jobs so were probably having to justify these on a regular basis. The rules were relaxed a few years ago for EU applicants, but have recently be tightened up again for non-EU's.

From the sounds of it, it is an annual one (sejour a l'annee - stay a year), but when you get it there should be a date on it to say when it is valid to: the delai de controle.

Re: Working permit - Customary meeting - Geneva Canton- Any thoughts?

Thank you Medea and those who have read this thread. Searching in this forum I read that Non- EU people are granted 1 year renewable B permits (rather than 5-year pemit such as the ones EU ppl receive). So, basically I assume I got the best permit available taking into consideration my particular situation? Am I correct?
The key issue for me it is to be in the best position when trying to accomplish the (almost) impossible misson of appartment renting in Geneva. I also read that those with limited or L permit have found hassles trying to secure good rentals. Any feedback on this?

Thanks again.

Plenty of people with an L or 1 year B permit have found housing.

Re: Working permit - Customary meeting - Geneva Canton- Any thoughts?

Congratulations on getting your B permit. Now that the Swiss government has clamped down on them I've heard that it is almost impossible for non-EU citizens to get them. I did hear, however, that some larger companies can still get them. Does anyone know some examples of companies in the Geneva area that can still get B-permits?
Thanks!!!
