Expired Permit and Car, So Can I Travel?

Ok...so my school put in my paperwork to renew my L permit and they have received my documents. The problem is they are way behind and I am now 6 weeks expired on my permit. Along with that, I cannot re-register my car until my permit is officially renewed. I have been told that I will not have a problem in Switzerland, but what about driving over the border? If I take a visitor to Europa Park could I run into trouble at the crossing? There is nothing more I can do but wait and I feel a bit like a prisoner.

It's not at all clear what you mean by 're-registering' the car. Is it not in your name? Or a different address?

Anyway, the answer is clear - come off the motorway and use a border crossing which is never manned

Why did you un-register your car?

Re: Expired Permit and Car, So Can I Travel?

My L permit is in the process of being renewed, but has expired. Until my permit is officially renewed, I cannot register my car. Since I was on an L permit, my car was only registered from July 31st 2011 to July 31st 2012. It has the nice red stripe down the plates. I was told I cannot register my car car for 2012-2013 until my permit is renewed.

That red stripe across the plates might be a bit of a give-away as you are tootling across the border or indeed parked up at Europa Park if you're not picked up by the border police beforehand.

Even if the German police are probably not arsed whether you are registered in Switzerland or not, it might invite some unwelcome investigation which might wreck your day.

I don't even care about a ticket at this point. What I don't want is to have the car towed and be stranded looking for a way home.

If it's not registered, it's also not insured!

Bad idea to drive at all, let alone across an international border.

I would expect the vehicle to be impounded if you are caught driving an unregistered vehicle.

Re: Expired Permit and Car, So Can I Travel?

My car in definitely insured because I renewed the insurance a week before the plate expired. They told me that I will have no problems if I get pulled over here in Switzerland because it is their fault that my renewal of the permit is delayed. I just don't know how the Germans or the French would react.
