Years doing MSc/PhD - do they count towards C Permit?

Does anybody know if the years spent here on a B permit doing a MSc or a PhD count towards the years needed to obtain a C permit?

Thanks!

Re: Years doing MSc/PhD - do they count towards C Permit?

In my case yes. My first 4 years here I was working, my fifth year was doing my PhD in Bern and I received my C 1 year into my PhD.
However, I was on a B permit prior to this and not on a student permit (L, I think?), so this might have a bearing.

Students get a B permit.

Re: Years doing MSc/PhD - do they count towards C Permit?

From the foreign national act:

Art. 34 Permanent residence permit

2 Foreign nationals may be granted a permanent residence permit if:
a. they have resided in Switzerland for a minimum of ten years in total on the basis with a short stay or residence permit,
and have held a residence permit without interruption for the last five years; and
b. there are no grounds for revocation in terms of Article 62.

5. Temporary periods of stay, in particular for education or training (Art. 27), do not count towards the uninterrupted period of stay in the last five years in accordance with paragraphs 2 letter a and 4. Periods of stay for education or training (Art. 27) are included if the person concerned, after their completion, held a permanent residence permit for an uninterrupted period of two years.

From the above, to have C permit (generally for all non-EU nationalities), you have to:
1. have lived in Switzerland with L or B permit for 10 years in total (need not to be uninterrupted), AND
2. you have a B permit for the recent 5 years, uninterruptedly.

Student permit may be included in the 10 years total counter, but it may not be included in the 5 years uninterrupted counter.

Is this correct? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Also, I don't understand the last sentence of Art 34 paragraph 5...

This is not correct. I'm sure a search for the many related threads here would yield much more information, but generally you get a C permit after 5 years on a B.
