Student visa: living in a different canton

After months of searching, applying for every possible avenue into getting into Switzerland and generally worrying myself stupid about it, I've finally been accepted into what is more or less my dream PhD program that can even supply the documents for a student visa to boot! The only issue is that while the school itself is in Valais, I don't have to be there for much of the year (periodical intensive seminar sessions, workshops and so on, but research is primarily independent) and would much, much prefer to live in Basel with my girlfriend who is working there. Is it possible to have a student visa issued in one canton but live in another? Also, more importantly, since I am planning on working part time on the student visa is it possible to work in a different canton as well?

Any help appreciated!

Re: Student visa: living in a different canton

I am going to start my PhD at ETH Zurich, but I will live in AG since my lab is actually there. A lot of people do that and it shouldn't be a problem.

I am an EU citizen anyway, so if you are not, that could be an additional issue.

Note the following about working when here on a student visa:

1) No work at all allowed in the first six months after arrival.

2) You need written confirmation from your institution that the work will not affect your studies in order to get the work permit.

3) In term time you can work a maximum of 15 hours per week.

There are small exceptions to these rules, but that's the general picture for 99% of cases. If you want to check the rules for yourself, they are here: http://www.bfm.admin.ch/content/dam/...t-erwerb-d.pdf

Re: Student visa: living in a different canton

Thanks a guys, good to know about the work/living situation.

I have been trying to get in touch with the Canton Valais authorities about how to apply for the visa and what documents are required, but it's been pretty hopeless so far. There's no information on their website, and I've sent them a few emails (in French) that have received no reply. Unfortunately my French isn't anywhere good enough to do much more than send rudimentary emails of enquiry, though I'll try and call them this afternoon.

Anyway has anyone here applied for a canton Valais/Wallis student visa and if so does anyone have any tips or places I could find some concrete information about it?

If you're an EU/EFTA citizen, it seems you register on arrival, probably once you have a certificate of registration from your place of study.

Re: Student visa: living in a different canton

As is so often the case, the two who asked the questions and got the replies haven't logged in for years.
It's quite possible that someone else will be along who can give you more information on the subject though.
Good luck anyway.
