Permit to live here without a job/as a Student from UK

Can anyone tell me how a Student would get a permit to live here with me?

They would not be working as they are in full time distance education at a University in the UK. They will have no bills here and would basically live as a ghost - no benefits and only being registered with the local geminde and having to pay health insurance.

She would look to get part-time work during Summer onwards. If this was up to 50% would she be entitled to get a B permit?

I think it is a very simple question to which I am finding it very difficult to get the answers.

Thanks

Re: Permit to live here without a job/as a Student from UK

Well, if she's an EU-17 national she can come here as a tourist for 90 days. Otherwise, I think she'd either have to prove to the authorities that she can support herself while she's here financially or you'd have to "sponsor" her in the same way, i.e. be willing to support her financially.

If she's from one of the EU-8 Member States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary) then it could be more problematic as I believe she must have a job offer to be able to be here due to the quota restrictions on citizens from those countries.

But how long is she expecting to stay for if she's in full time education in the UK?

I hope they have a job already lined up, things aren't quite as straightforward finding p/t work as they are in the UK.

Re: Permit to live here without a job/as a Student from UK

Thanks MF, she's an EU 17 national - British born, British passport holder. I would be sponsoring her. It's just knowing who to go to so as to register her and let them know I'd be doing so. She's looking to stay here but finish her MSc and further quals.

Homer - Yeah I gathered that. But if she obtained a permit to be here then she could surely look for work and extend/renew the required permit.

Re: Permit to live here without a job/as a Student from UK

When I was struggling to find a job my boyfriend and I looked into getting me registered as his partner. We had to prove that we had been together for at least 6 months before coming to Switzerland, he had to pay for my dependents permit and prove he could financially support me whilst I was living in Switzerland with him.

From what I understood it wouldn't have precluded me from looking for a job whilst I was here but it was not a work permit. As I am also British with a UK passport I believe (but am not 100% sure) that I would have been able to *look* for work since I would have been covered by the various freedom of movement and labour agreements within the EU but if I found work I would need a new work and residence permit like everyone else and my dependents permit would have been cancelled.

What kind of studies is she undertaking? The company I work for often take students on for internship placements part-time. If she's a scientist then I might be able to help when the time comes.

Re: Permit to live here without a job/as a Student from UK

If she's British then I don't think it would be a problem, but talk with the Zurich canton immigration people and also your commune if she's going to be living with you. They're the ones who will be issuing the relevant permit so have a talk with them to find the proper way to organise this.

Is she looking to study here or continue the distance learning? If here, then students can work part time, but again you need to check on your particular situation, particularly if she's continuing the distance learning and not going to school here. That might make a difference, I don't know.

Re: Permit to live here without a job/as a Student from UK

Thanks Firebird. Could you please tell me to which entity your Boyfriend applied for your dependent's permit? That would be a great help. She's doing an MSc in QS and Construction and a Grad Diploma in Law alongside it. Difficult in that we have both looked for Real Estate part-time positions for her already and also just some part-time admin work but there is hardly anything. So we just took the view that she'd come over and live as a dependent until she could find something part-time and I would support her through her studies.

MF - Thanks, I'll have a word with the local authority. She's just looking to continue her distance learning with the UK University and not with a Swiss school.

What are her language skills like? If she only has English, again it's going to be difficult to find a job with just one language.

The people you need to talk to are always the Einwohneramt or Migrationsamt of your canton.

You might also want to check there are no problems with the UK university providing the distance learning course - some "distance" courses still require residence in the UK for funding reasons, or a declaration that you can attend tutorial/assessment meetings when required.

Re: Permit to live here without a job/as a Student from UK

She's got some French but that's about it. I know it's difficult to find a job without more but the priority at the minute would be to get a residence permit of some sort. If it came to it once her studies are finished and there was no sign of a company which might accept her then we may have to re-think the whole plan.

Thanks Quark, she's already spoken with the University who have confirmed she can do this with a residence in Paris once or twice a year...what a shame hey!?
