Travel within EU with C-permit

I'm a US citizen resident in CH for over 20 years, with a C-permit. I travel once a month by air to England, and once a month to France. Now I'm facing a period of several weeks without my US passport, as it needs to be renewed and that takes quite a while. I know I'll need the passport to travel to the UK, but is it possible to travel between Switzerland and France with only a C-permit card to show at the airport controls? Has anyone tried this?

I'd be very grateful for any advice!

Many thanks,
Annelore

Re: Travel within EU with C-permit

Check with the airline ( they might be keen on proof that your passport is being renewed ).

Normally, airlines do not permit travel on a B or C card without a travel document ( passport for example ).

Overland is not so bad .. merely the sight of a valid permit B or C is good enough.

TIMATIC:

Traveling to France with just B Permit (no passport)....possible?

Ryanair: Non-EEU passport holder cannot online-checkin

Check yourself using Skyteam TIMATIC:

or the IATA query box:

Hi there,

If you're in Zurich, you can renew your passport without giving it up while it's being renewed. You set up an appointment with the Zurich consulate, which is a bit south of Bellevue (email: Zurich-CA@state.gov) to renew your passport in person - bring the regular by-mail renewal form (DS-82), along with payment in cash (110 CHF right now). When you're there, say that you want to keep your passport while this is in process, and they will have you fill out a sheet about how to contact you. Then they'll contact you when your new passport is ready, you go pick it up, and they punch holes in your old one.

I renewed it at the US Embassy in Bern last year, and despite expecting the whole process to take at least 1-2 months, I received it in the mail after 6 working days after sending it out for renewal.

Re: Travel within EU with C-permit

Annelore, the 'C' permit is only valid in Switzerland, a Swiss driving license would carry more weight in Europe, but it is no substitute. You need a passport, even an expired one is better than no passport.

Re: Travel within EU with C-permit

I renewed in Bern. They let me keep the old one while the new was being processed, and then I had to go in person to make the swap. It was not yet expired, so I had no problems travelling. In the swap, they actually just punched the hole in the old one while I was standing there and handed it back too.

Sam, I agree completely! Having been a "professional foreigner" for forty years, I normally don't even cross the street without a passport. But this time I was facing the prospect of having to travel without a passport while it was being renewed. Thanks to the great advice I've received here (special thanks to anowheels), I now have an appointment at the consulate for Tuesday (it seems that Monday is a holiday --- ??) and they have already assured me that I'll be able to keep the old passport while the new one is being made.

Problem solved! Alleluia!

Monday is a US holiday I think (president's day) and the good life is getting both Swiss and US holidays :-) glad it worked out!
