Background Check for Teaching

Hey All,

I am an American applying for a work visa in the Vaud canton to teach. I have a background check from China, where I have been working and residing for the past 1.5 years. The application I'm looking at says I need (translated into awkward English) "An extract from the judicial record of your country of origin and domicile."

Do I even need the background from the US? It's a huge pain (will take 7-8 weeks, I'd have to get fingerprinted here in China AND I have a DUI from when I was in college!) Do I have to get the federal one? Can I get a state background check, or is there some way to get around this?

I'm hoping I'm not screwed... I already have a contract with this awesome new school... Do you think the DUI would ruin my chances of getting the work visa if I had to submit the federal check?

I really appreciate any responses... Been quite worried about this!

I think you can supply the clean caise judiciaire later in the process, since you already have a conctract. If I remember well, mine had to be issued not older than 6 mo, though. State, though, in your permit application that you have applied for the clean background check adn are waiting for the results, give them a copy of the for that you filled in and had sent for the background check.

Thanks for the response, MusicChick. That would be good, but the problem is that I don't have a clean record (I have a DUI from several years ago). So what should I say?

Get a state one, and see. Now, I am not sure if you get a caise judiciaire from the place of your last residence or where you lived a few years. I think I would get it in China and submit. Don't you have to go to your embassy there to get it, either way? I got mine through embassy.

Re: Background Check for Teaching

I already have the China background check and I'm hoping that will be sufficient... Waiting for a response from my employer. I've lived in China for about 1.5 years, and in Thailand for a year before that... I wonder if I have to go to Thailand or perhaps the Thai embassy to get a background check from there.. it would be wonderful if they didn't need the US background check!

Are you from the US? And you got a US background check from that embassy?

Thanks a bunch!

Nope, and I got my clean check from my embassy in Bern, it was easy. They if I am not mistaken did it in one afternoon. Just submit what you have. They will let you know.

Re: Background Check for Teaching

Why don't you ask the school if your DUI is likely to be a problem?

Perhaps I'm being na´ve, but I would imagine they would a) be more likely to be able to give you a definitive answer than anyone else, b) would appreciate your honesty in mentioning it to them before it shows up on the background check, and c) be in the best position to pull strings should any need to be pulled.
