Have only Swiss visa so far (no residence permit): Can I invite girlfriend to visit?

Hi,
My situation is like this: Both I and my girlfriend are non-EU nationals staying in EU countries. I will move to Switzerland in a few days for my studies. I have a temporary Swiss Visa (type D). I know that I will have to register with the local authorities in Switzerland to get a residence permit. I am sending a letter of invitation which my girlfriend will use to apply for a visit-visa to Switzerland. The list of documents she requires includes "residence permit of the host." I do not know how exactly a residence permit is different from a visa, but as far as I can understand, the visa I now have is not equivalent to the residence permit required for her visa application. She needs to apply next week to have a realistic chance of visiting me during her holidays.

Does this situation mean that she will not be given a visitor visa? Will it ease things if I mention in my invitation letter that I will register with the authorities as soon as I reach there, or if I include my housing-contract?

Your suggestions will be very useful. If you have faced this situation before or know of people who have, please share your experiences.

The D visa is simply to enter Switzerland. The u need to register (complete some forms incl. the application for a residence permit, pay fee etc) with the town hall where you will be living.

They send off the documents to a central agency who issues your residence permit, and they contact you when to go and collect it.

The problem is I don't know if you can invite people befire the permit is actually issued (which can take weeks after you register) as 'in theory' the cantonal migration authorities can say no to your permit. But best to ask at the town hall when you go to register, that you need to invite someone.

But to be honest, i dont think you can make the deadline you mention -- if you haven't moved to CH yet, and she needs the form next week. But maybe the town hall can stamp the form saying "application for permit in progress or something" and let you use that..

Thanks for the reply and the suggestion. So, you think it is impossible to apply for visa before I receive my residence permit or a letter from the town hall?

Applying for a tourist visa is fine, but the problem is having to book a hotel room for almost 40 days

Why would you have to book a hotel?

Don't tourist-visa applications require copy of travel tickets and hotel-bookings ?

I have seen "confirmed hotel reservations" being required for tourist visa applications in several Swiss representations' websites. Here's an example from the UK website: http://ch.vfsglobal.co.uk/pdf/Touristvisa-030912.pdf .
