EU citizen working remotely from Switzerland

I'm just wondering if anyone has an idea of what category I would come under in terms of applying for a visa.

I am an EU citizen living and working overseas together with my girlfriend. She has just been accepted into a Swiss university and I would like to accompany her. I can do my current job remotely from Switzerland but would also like to pick up local work opportunities if they arise.

How could I apply for an initial residence permit? Would my current work contract and a letter from my employer confirming my ability to conduct the work from Switzerland, plus my girlfriend's university acceptance letter be sufficient? And should I do that only after arriving in Switzerland or now from my current country of residence?

Re: EU citizen working remotely from Switzerland

Sorry Lukki, but a bit more info is needed. Which EU country exactly? What sort of work is it? Working remotely is a bit of a grey area here really. Which university/canton will your GF be studying at?

Re: EU citizen working remotely from Switzerland

The onerousness of the bureaucracy may vary by Kanton, but basically the answer is yes: as an EU citizen, you can travel with (or without) your girlfriend and have 3 months to arrange your matters; you can take care of things at your Kanton's Gemeinde and Ausgleichskasse offices; your contract (including salary info!) should suffice *). A statement on remote work might be beneficial but is not necessary, and the girlfriend's paper is irrelevant (married would be different).

There are requirements for the wage that might depend on where you're settling, and the bureaucracy might give you a bit of run-around. It's probably not an everyday situation to resolve, but Basel officials were very helpful and resourceful.

My experience is very limited, and I'm not certain I've got the optimal deal, but I can tell more if desired. Conversely, I'd be interested in how your sitation is resolved.

Cheers, //ata

*) Edit to clarify: suffice in terms of what you listed. There will of course be forms to fill and attachments required at both offices, and at the tax office.
