I waited 5 months.

The FAQ page on their website says it can take up to 8 months.

So at 2 months you're still early days.

chill.
I don't find the FAQ, do you have a link?

Re: Normal Naturalisation - applicant diary

The same information comes in the cantonal citizenship letter.

There is a session "Prüfung Ihres Einbürgerungsgesuches durch das SEM" where it is written that "SEM usually decides on the granting of a federal naturalization permit within 8 months of receipt of the complete application documents.

Re: Normal Naturalisation - applicant diary

Indeed.

Based on all this I'm kinda hoping for finalisation around Easter. Anything before that will be a bonus, anything after will become exponentially disappointing

Re: Normal Naturalisation - applicant diary

Very happy to get the final approval!!!

I would like to contribute back to the favour of this thread which helped me to manage specially the expectations and chronology of the process of becoming Swiss.

This was an ordinary naturalization in the canton of Zurich for the whole family (2 children, 2 adults).

2019
- July (end): Submitted all paperwork
- October (early): Confirmation that my application had been received and I’ve been asked to update one document that I sent in the same month.
- November (early): Letter informing that the process has been sent to the Gemeinde

2020
- January (late) - Knowledge Test
- February (early) - Interview at the Gemeinde
- March (late) - Approval from Gemeinde (CHF 1’700). Our names got posted in the local paper (public has 30 days to file a complaint)
- June (late): Approval from Canton
- July (early): Invoice from Canton (CHF 1’000)
- August (early): Invoice from SEM (CHF 150)
- November (early): Swiss (around 3 weeks wait until I can apply for passport and ID)

Good luck to all!

Thank you! Gemeinde Meilen. The members and secretary of Bürgerrechtsbehörde were friendly and professional. I was lucky!

Congrats and well done!

Just a couple of questions:

*Was the cantonal approval and bill sent in separate letters? That seems quite strange.

*I assume you paid only for 2 adults and the kids were free? In which case, why was the SEM bill only 150chf instead of 200chf?

Thanks for the congrats!

The cantonal approval and the bill are separate letters. First the approval and in the letter, they say that the bill will come in another letter.

That is correct, the kids are free and SEM charges CHF150 for a married couple.

We didn't for our daughter; we just waited and couple of weeks, did the online application, and it all worked.

My assumption was that if you don't wait, then data hasn't synced and either the system or a person tells you they can't find the relevant references.

Quick update Sean Connery: I have received today the Schriftenempfangsschein from the Gemeinde and the request to surrender my C permit for cancellation as it has no value anymore.
