Thank you for providing an account of your odyssey.
We are starting the process this month with kids of the same age plus another one in between in Kanton Bern.
In our case only hubby and I need to sit the multiple choice exam.
We will receive the list of required documents only after passing the exam. I was told it is a two-year process.
We're excited to begin this journey! | Quote: | | | | | Canton Jura - Family application - kids aged 17 and 12 on submission
3 Year Odyssey!
September 2019 - submit all documents
December 2019 - told eldest son did not have an entry in the Etat Civil so had to get apostillated birth certificate to fix that
Jan 2020 - fix etat civil issue
Nov 2020 - attend interview and multiple choice exam - youngest child only exempt
March 2021 - aporoved as indigenous members of our Commune
June 2021 billed by Commune
July 2021 papers sent to Berne - bill arrived end July from Berne
October 2021 - approval from Berne - application sent back to Canton to finalise
December 2021 - asked to approve our names and details for finalisation of grant of citizenship - notice they spelt my name wrong - forename has a hyphen, they did not include hyphen
January 2022 - refuse to add hyphen to my forenames despite every official document I possess - including other passport and C permit including it
January to April 2022 - change of name process in UK and getting deed of name change apostillated and sent to Canton
July 2022 - Canton agree to finalise our grant of nationality but then shut up shop for summer holidays and as a law needs to promulgated, told we will have to wait until Cantonal parliament meets up again
August 2022 - invited to a ceremony to welcome us into the Commune - despite not yet being actually Swiss
September 2022 - letter that we are Swiss and inviting us to apply for passport and ID - but can’t actually do that for a further 3 weeks as cantonal records are not updated - as our C Permits had run out and we were due to go abroad for autumn holidays, daily chasing phonecalls finally got records updated and we could submit online application for passport and ID
End Sept 2022 - passport and ID took 4 days to arrive after having photo taken.
Finally … Swiss!
But heavens to goodness - you’ve got to want this thing to persevere | | | | | | This user would like to thank Carlasmom for this useful post:

Yahoo! Congrats, voyager. Thanks for sharing your journey with us and for being such a wonderful source of information and positivity on this forum! It's been so helpful for the rest of us. Warmest wishes as you embark on this new chapter in your life as a Swiss citizen. | Quote: | | | | | Almost home ! Repeat, almost home !
Captain’s log: Star date 20.11.2022. After having returned from a pleasant autumn break and having sorted a big pile of mail, mostly bills, it appears that there is an even more more pleasant treat as well, indicating that the end is in sight. 620 days or 1 earth year, 8 months, 10 days after having submitted the application for me and my better half, the Golden letter is here !
Prologue
Jan 2020 : Requested application form from Canton
Feb 2020 : Pass FIDE exam
March 2020 : Cantonal naturalisation test canceled on account of COVID
July 2020 : Pass Cantonal naturalization test
July 2020 : Validity of birth and marriage certificates run out. These needed to be have been re-issued within 6 months of submitting application
July 2020 - Feb 2021 : Collect certificates from home country, again. Use time to put together a very thick and compelling application file
March 2021 : Submit application
March 2021 : Receive cantonal bill, pay immediately
Feb 2022 : Receive invitation for interview
March 2022 : Pass Cantonal interview via WebEx
March 2022 : Approval by Commune
May 2022 : Receive SEM bill, pay immediately again
November 2022 : Receive Golden letter by B-post*
Epilogue to follow
The home stretch - oath ceremony followed by the ID card.
* Received 175 days after payment of SEM Bill
Big thanks to Litespeed and the many others on this thread and forum, who have so generously shared their experiences. And so much did I learn through this voyage : about Switzerland; about the virtues of persistence and patience; about the joys of paying some bills so eagerly and the realization that I love my letterbox; as well as about my own identity — what it will mean to be a citizen afresh, considering my home country will not allow dual nationality.
A word of appreciation as well for canton Geneva administration and that of my commune for their professionalism - always prompt to respond, helpful and kind too ! Even the interview was pleasant !
Good luck to everyone who will follow. Your time will come soon too. Live long, and prosper. | | | | | | This user would like to thank writerGVA for this useful post:

Congrats to ecb and voyager, and all those who finally got their Swiss citizenship!
I just got back from 2 weeks Down Under. It was soooo nice to finally be able to skip the "all other passports" queue at the passport control! | The following 2 users would like to thank litespeed for this useful post:

After checking my mailbox expectantly every day for the last couple of months I finally got the Kanton rights today and the application moves to SEM for the final stamp. When I write it out, my process looks relatively fast, but this is like videoing a tortoise in real-time and then watching it back on fast-forward. Patience is clearly not my virtue.
Still - celebrating one step closer today!
Sept 2021 Collect all papers together
Oct 2021 Submit citizenship application with all papers

Mar 2022 Gemeinde Männedorf confirm they grant me Gemeinderechts
Apr 2022 Pay Männedorf 800 CHF and they pass application to Kanton Zürich
July 2022 Pay Kanton Zurich 500 CHF and they pass to SEM | | | | | Quick update on my application above:
Aug 2022: SEM bill received and paid
Nov 2022: Silver letter - application moves back to ZRH Kanton for the home straight.

What do you think are my chances of a golden letter from Santa this Christmas? 🎅 😅 | | | | | In general, the only step that's pending now is for the canton order a criminal record extract for you and see that its empty. so, it takes so long as the time taken to get a criminal record extract. and this can be few days depending on how busy the criminal record extracts team is. sometimes it only takes 3-4 days and sometimes a couple of weeks.
so its very much possible that you might get your golden letter by Christmas but also note that the golden letter may already be posted in B post which may take unto 5 days to reach you. in effect, you might already be a Swiss citizen by Christmas but will get the letter just after Christmas because of the B post.
cheers

Zürich Canton has updated the application process for Naturalisation and tweaked some of the forms. Everything is now electronic making it much easier to follow and understand what's missing, track application progress etc. https://www.zh.ch/de/migration-integ...uergerung.html
Just in the process of finalising the application process in ZH canton and by the time we submit at the end of the week it'll have taken us (my better half & I - no kids) about a week and cost approx CHF250 to gather all the papers needed. Some paperwork can be ordered online such as Zivilstandregister and Wohnsitzbestatigung and others have to be requested in person at the Gemeinde such as tax & social help declaration.

Hi all,
Thanks all for your contributions. This forum and thread have been super helpful.
As I am preparing to apply for the citizenship soon (in VD), I was wondering if it is possible to register in the civil status register voluntarily beforehand without a specific reason (such as name change, marriage etc..). As I understood it, this would ultimately speed up the process of my application.
Any similar experiences ?

AS | | | | | Nope not allowed. What you can do to slightly speed up the état civil process is proactively send your original état civil documents (multilingual birth certificate, marriage certificate, certificate of bachelorhood etc issued by your home country or its embassy/consulate in Switzerland) together with your application.
But there shouldn’t be any more delays in état civil in Vaud, they did a major overhaul in 2022 and have centralised most functions in a building in Sévelin and are quite efficient assuming your case isn’t too complex.

There will be some worn-out F5 buttons in the near future :-D

About to kickoff the process for naturalization in ZH Feb 2023, this is the 10 year mark.
I think the most challenging part of this process will be the interview and integration test. Can anyone shed any light on what exactly involved in this? Just some questions in German about you and your life in Switzerland?
Thanks!
