Re: British Passport Renewal - Not Paris from 7th June 2013

Not as efficient as the French at it then. I got mine in about 3 weeks and they had to check the credit card number with me too before they could process it.

I guess this is part of the final phase of bringing all British passport processing back to the UK, no matter where you are in the world. This phase has been on hold for some years awaiting implementation.

Re: British Passport Renewal - Not Paris from 7th June 2013

Not that it makes any difference, but passports haven't been handled by Paris for a while ...... they were sent to Paris, who forwarded them on to Peterborough for processing. Turnaround time wasn't too bad, considering.

This is what Ireland implemented some years ago. However it took me 4 months to get a renewal with no issues on my application.

Interesting that a UK renewal is now more expensive than a Swiss one.

Re: British Passport Renewal - Not Paris from 7th June 2013

An easy way for some citizens is to make an appointment and go to one of their offices around the country.
You can then decide to have it posted to a UK address, or go back and collect it, https://www.gov.uk/ips-regional-passport-office

https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport
You can renew or replace your passport at any time. It costs £72.50 by post or £81.25 through the Post Office’s Passport Check & Send service.
Time left on an existing passport is added to your new one - up to a maximum of 9 months.

An easy way for Londoners used to be: to make an appointment and go to their office near Victoria station in London. You can then decide to have it posted to a UK address, or go back and collect it.
You can fly to London and pay for a 4 hour service, collect the passport & go back to the airport!

So I guess on a rough trajectory the next stop will be outsourcing in the Faroe Islands.

Nowt wrong with Durham, like. But at the price they charge, you might as well fly to London and get some shopping in...

The £72 application still takes 4 weeks so you would just chill in the UK for that time?

The 4 hour service is the best choice. I got it done while I was there a couple of weeks ago in Glasgow and was super easy.

So that's why you groaned fatmanfilms for saying the same thing?

The four-hour service isn't much cheaper than posting it from here, but I think it's the method I'll use when my passport expires next year (assuming I'm still in Switzerland then) as I'm often in London anway. And impatient

I did this just last week and it was great - super fast and efficient (so long as you have all the right info and photos etc) and you get your passport back on the day It was £128 which, as I was in London anyway, was way cheaper than sending it off!

I'm doing that next week. Mine expires at the end of the month. Fly into Glasgow, passport office and during the wait I'll go to the dentist* and get a little shopping.

Re: British Passport Renewal - Not Paris from 7th June 2013

Just as an aside. When I went to the Glasgow passport office a few weeks ago they did ask me for some additional identification with my address on it. They said a driver's license would do. I only had my Swiss one and didn't want to arouse suspicion so said my Wife drove me here so I don't have my license with me.

They then said my mother's details would suffice and I didn't have any problems and got the new one in a few hours.

Now I can use the fancy automated gates at the airport going into the UK.

All the info is there. As long as you have a UK address you can give you should be fine.

Don't complain! At this precise moment, my husband and daughter are en route to the Dutch Embassy in Berne to renew their passports; yes, you have to present yourself personally in order that the procedure can be carried out! Much more time-consuming than sending off papers to whatever address to renew a British passport wouldn't you say?

Wondering if there is any grace travel period on newly expired UK passports. Heard that Swiss passport holders can travel back to Switzerland even if the passport is expired.
